The chatter around Zion Williamson has changed from the future face of the NBA to people wondering if he’ll even be able to play beyond his current contract with fitness and health issues.

Zion’s personal life has also become public, making this the toughest summer for the Pelicans’ star, as he also is in the middle of trade rumors. That doesn’t change the fact Zion has been incredible whenever he’s been on the floor. Kevin Garnett was not happy with Paul Pierce for dismissing Zion as a generational talent when healthy.

Kevin Garnett: “First off, Zion [Williamson] is a generational talent… Motherf**kers was patient with [Joel] Embiid and Giannis.”

Paul Pierce: “I don’t really agree that he’s a generational talent.”

Kevin Garnett: “You’re f**king crazy.”

Zion has averaged 25.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 114 games played over his career, a pretty remarkable average for someone that’s played lesser games than an NBA sophomore from the 2021 draft class. His value on the court is not in question, it’s just if he can stay on the court enough to realize his superstar potential.

Should The Pelicans Trade Zion Williamson?

The Pelicans have checked the market for Zion’s value after the relationship between the player and the team completely fell apart. The Pelicans were said to have tried to see whether trading Zion could land them the No. 2 pick, but the Hornets reportedly declined and asked for Brandon Ingram instead.

Damian Lillard seems to want Zion to come over to Portland and the franchise reportedly prefers Zion over Ingram in a possible trade for the No. 3 pick. Their stance on whether they’re drafting or trading their pick is still undecided. If Lillard gets moved before draft night, the Blazers will almost definitely be out of the market for Zion.

If you can’t get good value as the Pels to win now after years of disappointment due to Zion’s inability to stay healthy, you may be forced into keeping him instead of shipping him for a draft pick that needs to develop over the years. They’re in a pickle but likely end up sticking with their guy due to value.
