Chicago Bulls guard Coby White recently sat down for a Q&A session, where he answered a wide range of questions from the hardest player to guard, to who would be on his Mount Rushmore of Chicago athletes.

Reporter: “What’s your favorite NBA jersey you own besides your own?”

Coby White: “Bed-Stuy Brooklyn Nets jersey.”

Reporter: “If you had a 1v1 with any celeb, who would it be?

Coby White: “Kevin Hart.”

Reporter: “If you could have a ticket to any game in sports history, what would it be and why?

Coby White: “Game 5 2016 Finals. That’s the game Kyrie (Irving) and (LeBron James) went crazy. I would want to see that in person.

Reporter: “If they were to make a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?”

Coby White: “Denzel Washington, for sure.”

Reporter: “Who is the hardest player in the league to guard?”

Coby White: “DeMar DeRozan.”

Reporter: “What’s your favorite NBA city to play in besides home?”

Coby White: “Toronto. I like playing in Toronto because of the fans. The fans are dope.”

Reporter: “What is the last show you binged?”

Coby White: “Suits.”

Reporter: “If you could trade places with one of your teammates for the day, who would it be?

Coby White: “Patrick Williams. Because he’s just like a cool dude. He’s always chill, and I’m always up.”

Reporter: “If you could build a Mount Rushmore of Chicago athletes, who would be on it?

Coby White: Derrick Rose, Mo Cheeks, Michael Jordan, Patrick Kane. Yeah, fasho.”

That is an interesting Mount Rushmore. First, we have Derrick Rose, who won MVP in 2011 while playing for the Bulls. Rose looked set to go down as one of the best players of his generation, but the injury bug then struck which led to him never quite being able to hit those heights.

Next is Mo Cheeks, who never actually played for the Bulls, but was born in Chicago and attended DuSable High School. Cheeks would end up being a four-time All-Star in the NBA and won a championship in 1983. He got into coaching post-retirement and is currently an assistant coach for the Bulls.

Michael Jordan was the third pick, and not much needs to be said here. Jordan won six titles, six Finals MVPs, and five MVPs in 13 seasons with the Bulls. He is the greatest player in franchise history and probably Chicago history as well.

Lastly, we get to Patrick Kane, who played for the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks from 2007 to 2023. Kane won three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013, and 2015) during his time with the franchise and in 2017, was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL players.

While Jordan and Kane are good selections, you could certainly come up with some better Chicago athletes than Rose and Cheeks. If we stick with the NBA, then Scottie Pippen is a name that immediately comes to mind.

If we head on to the NFL, we get Dick Butkus and Walter Payton, two of the greatest football players ever. From the MLB, Frank Thomas and Sammy Sosa would be deserving of the honor while Bobby Hull is another NHL icon who many would argue has to be there.

Coby White’s Breakout Season

Getting back to White, he is in the midst of a breakout season with the Bulls. The 23-year-old is averaging a career-high 19.2 points, to go with 4.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. He has also shot 46.3% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc, with both being career-best marks.

White has been one of the few bright spots in what has been a disappointing 2023-24 season for the Bulls, as they sport a 23-27 record. He is not going to one day end up in a Chicago Mount Rushmore but could be a very good player for the Bulls for a very long time.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely.
