Charles Barkley isn’t mainly known for his elite fashion sense, although he does love making fun of the way some modern NBA stars dress. He was himself a lost cause once, though until some other NBA legends got involved.
In the 1984 NBA draft, Charles Barkley was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers. They had champions and All-Stars Julius Erving and Moses Malone on the team. And before any guidance on the court, the two legends took Chuck shopping.
“They say, ‘We’re taking you shopping,’” Barkley said on The Icons Club podcast. “They took me to Boards store, and I spent like $25,000. I was like, ‘Are y’all crazy?’ Because I ain’t never made any money in my life. They buy me about 10 to 15 suits, and the bill was like $25,000.
“When I got the bill, I was like, ‘Man, y’all are crazy.’ And I remember calling my agent and my mom and grandma. ‘I spent $25,000 today, y’all.’ And my grandmother says, ‘I never made that much money in my life.’ And it was so funny, but they were right. This is professional basketball, you can’t walk around in sweats.”
The sensibilities regarding what players can and should wear have changed since that era. Allen Iverson was responsible for a massive cultural shift in the NBA, with players feeling a lot more comfortable dressing how they want to since he did it. But the main gripe of Barkley’s story, the price, has only gotten worse, with players often rocking designer outfits.
Charles Barkley Has A Lot Of Comments About How Modern NBA Stars Dress
The modern NBA is vastly different in every aspect from the 1980s and 90s, particularly when it comes to style. Players try out more adventurous outfits, even before games. And in his job, covering said games for TNT, Barkley often has some hilarious comments to make about some of the get-ups that he sees.
He hilariously reacted to one of Russell Westbrook’s outfits, saying that if he had a body like the star guard, he would walk around naked. And who can forget the time he called James Harden ‘The Grinch’ for the way he was dressed? The story about Julius Erving and Moses Malone is epic within itself, but it would be hilarious to imagine what Barkley might wear if he was a rookie in today’s league and the likes of Westbrook and Harden were his vets.
