The Los Angeles Clippers went all in on winning in 2019 when they signed Kawhi Leonard in free agency and traded for Paul George to create an incredible duo.
Success has eluded the Clippers though, one playoff choke and a litany of injuries later, they are yet to even make the NBA Finals. And it seems four years in, they have made Paul George potentially available for a trade out of frustration.
“I was hearing things that suggested Paul George was in play, and everything since then has validated that,” NBA insider Howard Beck said on the ‘FnA’ podcast with Kevin Figgers and Adam Ausland.
“I think he’s in play. Lawrence Frank is gonna say what he has to say. Team GMs and presidents always say, ‘No, we love our guys,’ right up until the moment that they trade him. That’s just how this thing goes. They’re not trying to give him away, but they are trying to pivot, and they do have a franchise-wide frustration with the way that this era has gone.”
Paul George is more available than Kawhi Leonard, but that isn’t saying much as he has never played more than 56 games in a season during his time with the Clippers. He was injured for this season’s playoffs as well, with the team getting unceremoniously bounced by the Phoenix Suns in the first round. It’s understandable if the management is willing to make some serious changes moving forward.
Paul George Has Been Linked With The New York Knicks
If there is one team that has assets to trade and could use a star to take them to the next level, it’s the New York Knicks. And according to reports, there have already been trade discussions about George between the Knicks and the Clippers.
“The Knicks and Clippers have had contact about a potential Paul George trade, per SNY sources. It is unknown if the Clippers are willing to move George. Marc Stein reported earlier that Clips gave rival teams the impression that they were gauging George’s trade value last week.”
In the last three seasons, George has averaged 23.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game for the Clippers. He is an excellent defender as well, the model wing for the modern NBA. The franchise may decide to run it back one more time, but it does seem like PG’s days in Los Angeles might be numbered.
