At 25 years old, Jayson Tatum still has plenty of time to win a title before his career is over. On a Celtics team that is currently stacked with talent (and boasts the best record in the league), Jayson seems to be on track to start adding rings to his fingers. But according to NBA analyst Colin Cowherd, the title window may have already shut for Tatum… at the very least, it’s closing fast.

“He had about a two-year window to win a title. He has to go through Giannis in his prime, Jokic in his prime, Luka’s moving into his prime. Wemby is three years from his prime. SGA now into his prime… and I’m just not sure he’s better than any of those guys. Tatum was not ready when he first got into the league… Now he’s not as good as the young guard.”

This could very well be the year that the Celtics win the championship, but this is not new territory for them. In fact, the Cs have been winners for most of the Jayson Tatum era and already have multiple playoff runs under their belt. Unfortunately, the Celtics were unable to capitalize on their chances and things aren’t going to get any easier with guys like Giannis, Joel Embiid, and Jimmy Butler fighting for supremacy.

Missed Opportunities For The Celtics

The Celtics have been the best team in basketball this season, but you could say similar things about them in years past. The difference with this team always comes in the playoffs. Historically, this Celtics group just hasn’t been able to close the deal.

Starting in 2018, the Celtics made a run to the East Finals with Tatum,  Brown, and Kyrie Irving but they failed to win the series after losing to LeBron’s Cavaliers in 7 games. In 2020, the Celtics again made the Eastern Conference Finals and were favored to win against the Miami Heat… but they lost in just 6 games in that series. In 2022, Boston achieved their best milestone yet by making the NBA Finals. They were up 2-1 against the Warriors that year before losing the final three games to close out the playoffs. So, when it comes to Boston, they are always a team that’s close… but never quite good enough. This season, they have done a lot to stack the odds in their favor but there are still some doubts about what they can do given their history of flame-outs in the past.

All Eyes On Tatum

With averages of 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game on 47.4% shooting, there is no question that Jayson Tatum is one of the top stars in this league. But without the playoff success to validate his status, Tatum will never reach the heights of his peers, guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic.

The next step for Jayson is to deliver when it counts the most and finally take the Celticxs to a place they haven’t been since 2008. The path ahead will be challenging, especially with stars like Giannis and Tyrese Haliburton in the way, but if Tatum doesn’t capitalize on the opportunity right now, and finish this season with a championship, he may lose his best chance yet of changing the narrative about this career.
