The Atlanta Hawks swung big to add a co-star next to Trae Young ahead of the 2022-23 season, and the man they settled on was Dejounte Murray. Murray had been with the San Antonio Spurs, who weren’t going anywhere in a hurry, and he seemed like the ideal backcourt partner for Young.

The San Antonio Spurs have enjoyed arguably the best culture in the NBA in the 2000s, and a lot of that has to do with the legendary Gregg Popovich. Most players that have played for Coach Pop have had nothing but amazing things to say about him, and his win record speaks for itself. More than anything, it’s the things that players that leave him have to say about him as well.

When he got to the Hawks, Dejounte Murray seemed like he unleashed a side to him that had never been seen. Many speculated that it was because Popovich had kept a tight leash on him in San Antonio that he no longer had to adhere to. Murray even took a shot at his former franchise, which only fueled the fire. But it would seem that the guard has nothing but respect for his former coach now.

“My OG 4Life. Don’t Ever Get It Twisted!!!! LOVE YOU OLD MAN!!”

The Atlanta Hawks beat the San Antonio Spurs handily on Saturday night, with Dejounte and Coach Pop sharing a moment after the game. And it’s lovely to see Dejounte appreciate Popovich, even though the two didn’t win much together. He isn’t the first star to appreciate Pop despite not enjoying too much success with the Spurs.

DeMar DeRozan Fondly Recalled When Gregg Popovich Made The Spurs Watch A Penguin Documentary

Like any legendary coach, Gregg Popovich has things that make him unique. Demar DeRozan, another star who only has great things to say about Pop explained how he once made the Spurs watch a documentary about penguins to teach them about teamwork.

“I remember Pop made us watch a penguin National Geographic movie. It was very interesting. It was basically learning about teamwork. How to come together as one and go after a common goal, whatever that goal was. I thought it was going to be a day where we watch film. But we watched a full penguin movie – and it was the most interesting sh*t.”

The Spurs may not be winning right now, but if they can land Victor Wembanyama in this upcoming draft, then the league will be in trouble again. It remains to be seen how long Coach Pop will stick around, but the culture he has built in San Antonio will surely outlive his legendary tenure.
