- DeMar DeRozan doesn’t think the Chicago Bulls need to rebuild
- The forward claimed people who float the idea “don’t understand basketball”
- The star also noted that rebuilds can take longer than expected
The Chicago Bulls are a squad that is kind of in “no man’s land” as of right now. Though they made the playoffs during the 2022 season, they ended up losing in the play-in tournament in 2023. Despite the talent that is currently on the roster, many people believe that the Chicago Bulls should rebuild and look toward the future.
Recently star forward DeMar DeRozan has opened up to Mark Medina of Sportskeeda Basketball about people saying that the team needs to blow things up. DeRozan revealed that people who say that “don’t understand basketball”, and noted that it is never clear how long a rebuild will go on for a franchise.
“I think a lot of people who say that or suggest that really don’t understand basketball at all, in my opinion. You can think that’s an answer or that’s a route. But there’s no telling how long that route is going to even last. That route doesn’t necessarily always work in a timely fashion that you may think it will take. With that, it’s hard to find and create talented players like the players that we already have assembled. We made a lot of mistakes. It’s not only on the players, but the coaching staff as well to be able to correct the mistakes that we have because we weren’t far off at all with the mistakes that we’ve had.”
It is easy to see how trading Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan could help the Chicago Bulls build for the future. However, DeRozan is right in saying that it is hard for a team to assemble a squad featuring multiple stars like the Bulls have now. The direction the team takes could become more clear by the trade deadline, and if the Bulls are in a playoff position then, there’s no reason to rebuild.
Last season, DeMar DeRozan averaged 24.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, while shooting 50.4% from the field. He is still a really impactful player, and we’ll see how well he does next season.
DeMar DeRozan Needs To Take More 3PT Shots
There is no doubt that DeMar DeRozan is elite from the midrange area, and consistent scoring from that part of the court is how he became a star-level player. However, he needs to take more 3PT shots overall, as perimeter shooting is a big part of the modern game. However, DeMar DeRozan clapped back at critics saying he doesn’t attempt enough 3PT shots, noting that he’s “great” at what he does.
It remains to be seen if DeRozan will improve his 3PT shot next season. A lot of stars tend to work on their shooting as they get older, and we’ll see if DeRozan does the same going forward to help the Bulls achieve success.
What Can We Expect From The Chicago Bulls?
The Chicago Bulls have a high ceiling as a team, but also a low floor. Though there is a chance that they could become a playoff team next season, they could also end up in the lottery, especially if their older players decline.
The good news for the Chicago Bulls is that they have a number of young players such as Coby White on their roster, and they could develop those players if they trade their stars.
The team could also use those young players to make a trade if they do well ahead of the trade deadline. It is clear that the team has some flexibility, which is why they mostly stood pat during the offseason.
Hopefully, we see the Chicago Bulls do well next season. They have to get off to a quick start to build momentum in the East, and if they don’t they risk being one of the worse teams in the East.
