For young NBA stars in the 1990s, Michael Jordan was the man they all aspired to be like. He dominated the era and became a superstar, the likes of which hadn’t been seen before. So most of those stars have stories of the first time they met their hero.
Dwyane Wade is from Chicago, which was even more intense for him. And the night he got drafted into the NBA was the first time he met Michael Jordan. He recently told the story to Rachel Nichols during an interview.
“It’s my cousin, in the party… He came up to me and he said, ‘Bro, Michael Jordan is here,'” Dwyane Wade said. “And I said, ‘Where’s he at?'”
“So I think he playing games with me, and I’m like, ‘Where he at?’ And he’s like, ‘He’s outside. They won’t let him in… Bro I’m not playing.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, so let’s go.’ So we beeline out the door. Right out the door, there’s a slew of motorcycles. And Michael Jordan is sitting right there on one of the motorcycles, I rolled up right up to him, it was like seeing a ghost.
“And I went right up to him, and he said, ‘I just wanted to come and show you some love. He felt a way, I don’t know why they wouldn’t let Mike in. But yeah, he was outside, he was on a motorcycle and he said, ‘I came to show you some love.’ Congratulations, and the whole welcome to the NBA kind of thing. So that’s a true story. That was my first time meeting Michael Jordan and it was the coolest experience ever. He was sitting on a. motorcycle looking cool as sh*t.”
This must have been surreal for Wade, who was just a kid from Chicago. He would go on to become a legend in his own right and win three championships, but on draft night, he was just a young man being shown some love by his idol.
Dwyane Wade Modeled His Game After Michael Jordan
Dwyane Wade was selected 5th overall by the Miami Heat in the legendary 2003 NBA draft, and he went on to become the greatest in the franchise’s history. He was influenced heavily by Michael Jordan as well, among other stars, which he once spoke about.
“So I’m a big Jordan guy, which everyone knows. But I was a big Allen Iverson and Kobe guy. Those were my three that I kind of followed and tried to pat my game after because I thought all of those three different guys’ games was something attainable for me.”
Michael Jordan respected Dwyane Wade, too, he once named him as a modern star he would have loved to play against. And this story is an epic one for fans that watched both these legends leave their mark on the NBA.
