• The Bucks are favorites to win the 2024 NBA Title after this trade

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been to the championship mountaintop before and is ready to win again. After expressing his desire to not be a part of the Bucks if they can’t win more titles, the franchise went and got him All-NBA talent Damian Lillard to form arguably the best duo in the league.

Giannis has been given the tools, and an NSFW text message to Lillard after the trade was announced shows he’s ready to bring another title to Milwaukee.

“When the deal was announced, one of the first text messages Lillard received was from Antetokounmpo. It read, ‘Let’s get this f***king championship.'”

The Bucks are being considered title favorites after acquiring Lillard, with fans and experts loving the fit given Milwaukee’s established defensive ethos. The rotational depth is lacking but that can be addressed with further moves, with players like Cameron Payne still sitting on the market.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Full Reaction To Acquiring Damian Lillard

Giannis had a pretty animated response to the acquisition of Lillard. While he expressed his sadness about losing Jrue Holiday, it’s clear to see that the only thing Giannis wants to do now is compete for titles alongside Lillard.

“It’s a bittersweet day for the city of Milwaukee. You get Dame, who is a great player, but you lose a great guy… But we’ve got to focus on the goal to win the championship. Dame wants this. He’s hungry to win, and he’s going to push us. I’m very happy to have him on our team.”

Both Lillard and Giannis averaged over 30 points last season and will be expected to have a lethal one-two combination. Everything Giannis can’t do on offense is something Lillard can do, and everything Lillard can’t do on defense is something Giannis can do.

They should have a healthy partnership, especially when Lillard thinks Giannis would be the perfect player to push for a championship with.

A Tough Road To Winning Another Title

The Bucks have had two rough playoff exits since triumphing with the 2021 NBA Championship. In 2022, they saw injuries whittle down the squad as they lost a tough seven-game series to eventual finalists, the Boston Celtics. It was an admirable playoff run that was ruined with Khris Middleton getting hurt.

Middleton’s injury issues came into last season as well, leading to the Bucks start playing just 33 games in the season. With Giannis picking up minor injuries in the first round, the Bucks looked like no match for the eight-seeded Heat that beat them convincingly despite Milwaukee having the best record in the NBA.

The 2022 loss was explainable, but the 2023 loss was a disaster. The Bucks’ contending window looked to have passed for many people, but acquiring Lillard has put them back into that mix. It’s fair to call them favorites to win the title given the balance of defense and scoring they have on the roster.

But the NBA is full of teams that will be looking to end another superstar duo’s hopes. If one of Milwaukee’s rivals like the Celtics or 76ers gets Jrue Holiday, the Bucks will be worrying once again. But all they can do is leave everything on the court, which Giannis and Dame are known to do anyway.
