The season has not gone according to plan for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Coming in with high expectations on the season, the Giannis-Lillard connection has been underutilized so far and the results on the court have been nothing shy of disappointing. For Giannis, he’s doing everything he can to right the ship and get his guys back on the right track before it’s too late.
“We can keep on making excuses and think that things are going to be okay but that doesn’t work in life, it doesn’t work like that you have to figure out solutions and right now our solution is oh we have a new player, and a new coach so we’re going to be better in game 40?? No,” said Giannis. “We have to get better, we have to play together, we have to be more clear on what we try to get on offense and accomplish on defense. If we just stay with the mindset of ‘we’re just going to get better in the future’ we will not. We have to every day come to the court and figure out ways to get better and I believe as a team we will get better hopefully.”
The Bucks are 2-2 in the first four games so far and have an atrocious -6.8 point differential. The first loss was a 17-point defeat against the Hawks, where Damian Lillard was held to just 6 points on 16.7% shooting. The most recent loss was against the Toronto Tators on Wednesday. After the buzzer, the score was 130-111 in favor of the Raptors, who shot a red-hot 56% from the field for the game.
Panic Mode In Milwaukee?
Any longtime NBA fan will tell you that the first few weeks of the season aren’t a good barometer for determining the best teams in the league. With things so fresh and new, the opening few weeks of the season are often an adjustment period for teams across the league and the Bucks are no different. 4 games in, it would be foolish to make any definitive determinations on this team right now.
Even still, things aren’t looking good for the Bucks. For some reason, Giannis and Damian have not been using the pick-and-roll as often as they should and the offense in general just looks completely disorganized. Brook Lopez, who was among the team’s most valuable players during their title run, has struggled to defend around the rim and even 3x All-Star Khris Middleton has looked rusty in the first four games. If things don’t change soon, critics will start asking serious questions about the competence of first-time coach Adrian Griffin.
Bucks Vs. Celtics In The East
Together, Giannis and Lillard form, arguably, the most talented duo in basketball, and their potential together is limitless if they can stay healthy on the court this season. But after the Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday this offseason, the title of best in the East is officially up for grabs. Assuming that the Bucks do eventually figure it out, winning the Conference is no guarantee with the Celtics standing in their way.
So, needless to say, the Bucks need to figure things out soon if they want to keep pace with Boston, who is already off to a rocking start at 4-0 on the season. Fortunately, Giannis seems aware of the level of urgency required to rise to the occasion in 2024.
