Zion Williamson’s weight is once again the hot topic of discussion on social media and Gilbert Arenas believes desperate times call for desperate measures. On the latest episode of Gil’s Arena, the 41-year-old stated the New Orleans Pelicans should hire security to stop Williamson from ordering room service at hotels.
“I’m going to spend an extra million dollars on security to protect my money,” Arenas said. “Same thing I was saying with Ja (Morant). I’mma spend an extra million dollars. I got your security. I have your security. I’m willing to give you $200 million, what’s going to cost me an extra million for security?”
Arenas then stated that he would have security standing in front of Zion’s door to ensure there was no food going inside.
“In the hotel, I can put a security by his door, there’s no food coming in this motherf*****,” Arenas stated.
(starts at 12:24 mark):
That might just be a bit extreme and I’m sure Williamson would be furious if the Pelicans did something of that sort. It would certainly ensure, though, that whenever the 23-year-old is at a hotel with the team, he wouldn’t be consuming more than what the team would want him to.
Prior to this, co-host Kenyon Martin had revealed that when he was with the New Jersey Nets, he had a teammate who had a drinking problem. While every hotel room tends to have a minibar, Martin shared how the Nets informed the hotel beforehand, that said player’s room should not have it.
The individual was also not allowed to order drinks or even enter the bar. Martin believes the Pelicans also have to be proactive and take some measures to ensure Zion is in shape.
The Final Three Years Of Zion Williamson’s Contract Are No Longer Guaranteed
The reason why the spotlight is on Williamson yet again is because his weight might just cost him a lot of money. Zion could end up losing $126 million if he does not meet weigh-in checkpoints moving forward.
When the Pelicans gave Zion a five-year, $193 million deal in 2022, they inserted clauses into the contract to protect themselves. One such clause was that had he missed more than 22 games in the 2022-23 season, then the remaining three years of his contract would no longer be guaranteed.
Well, Zion only played 29 games in that campaign, which means the Pelicans can cut ties with him after this season without taking any financial hit. It isn’t something that they are planning to do, though, but should the situation worsen, they have that option now.
Also important to point out, is that Zion can earn back those guarantees by playing in enough games and hitting those weigh-in checkpoints. So, if he wants to ensure he gets that money, all he has to do is stay in shape and play games on a regular basis, which is the least you should be expecting of him.
Zion Williamson Says The Best Is Yet To Come
Williamson has been getting bashed from all corners in the last few weeks and as tends to be the case nowadays when one isn’t in the best of shape, has been ridiculed a lot as well. Zion says he doesn’t care about the fat jokes and claims the best is yet to come.
I certainly hope that the best is yet to come, as Zion is averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game this season. If he manages to keep his weight in check, I have no doubt he’ll be one of the best players in the NBA, but the question is will he be able to do it?
