Jason Kidd gave some real hype to his star player Luka Doncic ahead of the Dallas Mavericks’ clash against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Per Sports Illustrated’s Grant Afseth, Kidd explained how the Slovenian had taken advantage of Kyrie Irving’s arrival and his style of play.
“His ability to catch and shoot or be able to re-drive it — he’s one of the best players in the world, so again, I think he’s doing a great job of the reads.”
Kidd further elaborated on Doncic’s prolific shooting.
“Before Kai, he might have had two or three [plays] where he can catch and go. The other night, he might have had eight,” he opined.
“It’s just a different game for him to be able to catch-and-shoot, or catch-and-run with it. When he is able to catch and go, he uses his body to get fouled to get to the free throw line, it’s a different game.”
The Mavericks came into the season with the intention of reducing the load on the 23-year-old, and by trading for Irving ahead of the trade deadline, they sorted that issue out. With two fluent scorers in the side, Dallas gives themselves a solid chance to make a deeper run in the postseason.
Kyrie Irving Explains What It Is To Play Alongside Luka Doncic
Kyrie Irving’s arrival in Dallas has seen mixed results for the side thus far. They have won three of their last six games, but the Irving-Doncic chemistry is seen and safe to say, is sizzling.
After his two games alongside Doncic, Irving was asked about the synergy between the two, and the former NBA champion said it was a great feeling, while also adding that he was figuring out how to play with him.
“I am figuring out his pace, especially in the first quarter,” the guard said. “Coming out of halftime, figuring out what pace we’re going to play at. When we’re up and running and gunning a little bit and switching on the perimeter, doing things that keep the game going, not taking the ball out of the rim. We’re locked into the details of our adjustments. I feel like we play extremely well when we’re doing that.”
The Mavericks are one of the teams poised to make the playoffs, and much will ride on Doncic and Irving’s form. It remains to be seen if they can go the distance and emerge victorious by the end of it all.
