Joy Taylor was asked who she thinks is under the most pressure on the Los Angeles Lakers on FS1’s ‘Speak’. She noted that JJ Redick is under the most pressure. She cited the expectations that come with coaching the Lakers, both on and off the court, which will mean that any problems that come with his performance could cost him the job.
“JJ Redick [is under the most pressure]. It’s not Jeanie Buss, she owns the team, so she’s not going anywhere… LeBron is not going anywhere, he just signed a new contract. Bronny James just got drafted. Pressure to me is, if you don’t perform, are you going to be here or not? And to me, the only answer is JJ Redick.”
“JJ is new, JJ is inexperienced, there’s already questions about why or who got him hired… which really doesn’t matter at all if you have some success. They just fired Darvin Ham, who went to the Western Conference Finals, and then went back to the playoffs. And before that, they fired Frank Vogel, who won a championship.”
“So, I don’t know what the standard is, or what the expectations are for JJ Redick this year. But I know they aren’t bad. I know they aren’t this team doesn’t look dysfunctional. I know this team is out of the playoffs, and there’s no chance that they’re going to make that miraculous turnaround that they did when they made it to the Western Conference Finals.”
“There’s going to be a lot of attention and questions on him. How he handles the media, this is Los Angeles. It’s not New York City, but the coverage of the Lakers is tight. People care about what happens with the Lakers. The relationship with the media, how you’re talked about…”
“There’s a lot of dynamics here of coaching the Los Angeles Lakers that is not just coaching a basketball team. It’s not just coaching a basketball team with stars. To me, JJ Redick is under the most pressure. If everything goes sideways, which I don’t think it will, but if it does, who is going to be the person most at risk for not making it through the season? That’s JJ Redick.”
“JJ Redick… JJ is new, JJ is inexperienced… There’s going to be a lot of attention and questions on him.”

Redick is undoubtedly facing a lot of pressure. Several people in the media have questioned his appointment as the head coach of the Lakers, considering he has no coaching experience at all. But the franchise has shown a great deal of faith in him, and he will want to repay that faith in kind, by leading the Lakers well this year.
NBA Experts Think Lakers Are Far Away From Contending Status
NBA insider Zach Lowe spoke this week on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ about the Lakers’ and their chances to win an NBA championship next season. While he thinks the Lakers are a good team in the Western Conference, there is still a major gap between them and the contenders in the league, and they don’t have enough to overcome that.
“What is the move you want Rob Pelinka to make to turn this team that won one playoff game into a team that can win 12 playoff games against juggernaut after juggernaut in the West?”
“DeMar DeRozan and Tyus Jones… Those guys don’t close the gap between the Lakers and the Thunder, Wolves, the Nuggets, and the Mavericks. Even that is not enough. They’re a good team in the Western Conference. … There’s a big gap between a good team and a great team and I’m not sure how they can close it.”
The Lakers have a lot to consider going forward. They have been poor when it comes to attracting free agents, with Buddy Hield being the latest to reject the chance to join them. In fact, Rob Pelinka made a massive misstep when trying to sign Klay Thompson, not even speaking to him once throughout his free agency.
The Lakers are no longer able to attract superstars to Tinsel Town, for a variety of different reasons. So they will need to rely on LeBron James and Anthony Davis to do the heavy lifting once again this year, as they attempt to pull off another miraculous deep run in the playoffs.
