The 1992 Dream Team was arguably the greatest team ever assembled. It was the first time that NBA players were allowed to represent Team USA in the Olympics.
The likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and many more donned the Team USA jersey and won the gold medal with a perfect 8-0 record. Evidently, the game-worn jersey of each player on the 1992 Dream Team is worth a lot of money. NBA legend Karl Malone recently revealed how his wife helped him in collecting each player’s jersey.
“Well, as much as I would like to take the credit after we opened it up for the families, jerseys were just kind of laying on the floor,” Malone said. “My wife just started going up, picking up the jerseys, and that’s how it happened. … So, I can’t take all the credit.”
Playing for the 1992 Dream Team was one of the biggest highlights for Karl Malone. Thanks to his wife, Malone got his hands on arguably one of the most valuable basketball-affiliated memorabilia.
Karl Malone Sold 1992 Dream Team Memorabilia For More Than $5 Million
Karl Malone held an auction on Wednesday to sell game-worn jerseys and shoes of each of his teammates from the Dream Team.
Malone netted over $5 million with the items sold in the auction. The highest-selling item was, unsurprisingly, Michael Jordan’s game-worn jersey. The Bulls legend wore the number nine jersey against Lithuania in the semifinals. It was sold for over $3 million.
But that wasn’t the only Michael Jordan item that gathered a plethora of bids, his Air Jordans were sold for $450,000 as well.
Seeing that Malone made over $5 million by selling his Dream Team memorabilia, it will certainly motivate other players to do the same as well. Keeping that in mind, fans may see more of such items auctioned in the future.
