Kristaps Porzingis isn’t the same player he used to be on the New York Knicks, but he’s having a very nice time in Washington, recovering his best form with the Wizards after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks.

So much so that the Wizards are reportedly planning to offer him a big contract this offseason.

“Porzingis and the Wizards have been serious discussing a new deal in which he would opt out of his $36 million player option for the 2023-24 season and sign a new long-term deal, those sources say.”

“The Wizards can offer Porzingis a maximum of four years and $180 million if he opts out for next year and extends his deal. The deadline to reach such an agreement is in late June,” Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

The Wizards reportedly plan to keep building on their so-called Big 3 of Porzingis, Bradley Beal, and Kyle Kuzma. These three have shone at different points this season, and the team believes they are the future of the franchise. That’s why they traded Rui Hachimura to favor Kuzma and gave a huge deal to Beal before this season.

Now, Porzingis could sign another big contract to extend his stay in D.C. He’s not the same player he was in New York, but he’s definitely better than he was in Dallas. This season, he’s posting 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in 65 matches this season.

Washington Wizards Are Still Trying To Make It To The Play-In Tournament

Meanwhile, the Wizards are trying to climb positions on the Eastern Conference standings. They are still alive in the race, especially after getting a huge win against the Boston Celtics.

They are 2.5 games away from the Chicago Bulls, and the next couple of games will define their fate in the 2022-23 NBA season. Porzingis is ready to help his team reach at least the play-in tournament and perhaps be an uncomfortable rival for the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, or Philadelphia 76ers in the playoffs.
