Kyrie Irving brought his family courtside to watch the Dallas Mavericks face the Washington Wizards. While Kyrie and the Mavs pulled off a strong comeback win on a cold team shooting night, Irving’s two-year-old son, Kaire, found himself in a spot of danger. Wizards forward Corey Kispert nearly fell on Irving’s son courtside.
Luka Doncic could be seen checking up on Irving’s son seconds after the incident, with the camera then cutting to Kyrie also checking up on his family.
Kyrie was seen having a long one-on-one discussion with Jason Kidd after the game while with his son.

Irving later revealed that the conversation was about Kidd advising him not to bring his young children courtside due to the physical danger they’re in. After the Kispert incident, it seems Irving was quick to agree with him.
“We were talking mainly about my son, Kaire, sitting courtside, and he was reminding me of a story of when he was playing and TJ, his son, was sitting courtside and he ended up diving into the stands and broke his collarbone. So he was just reminding me that just for the safety of our game, safety for my wife and my kids, maybe they shouldn’t sit courtside as often when the game gets physical. So [Kidd] was just giving me advice and me and my wife were talking about it after the game, you know, it’s been three years, having the boys down there every game and nobody’s come that close and it was scary for me. I took a deep breath afterward, just wanna make sure, of course, my kids are OK. But when things happen like that, it’s just spur of the moment. My wife did a great job of protecting Kai.”
I asked Kyrie Irving about the conversation that he and Jason Kidd had walking to the locker room:

Irving scored 26 points on an efficient 10-19 shooting night. The Mavericks were on the back foot for most of the night, entering the fourth quarter with a 10-point deficit. But the team played a nearly immaculate quarter with Luka Doncic breaking a cold spell to win the game 112-104.
Irving is averaging 25.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this season.
The Mavericks Need Kyrie Irving To Contend
The Mavericks are on a season-high five-game win streak right now. All five wins have come after Kyrie returned from a thumb injury and has balled out since. He’s averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.2 assists over these five games, providing strong defense along with efficient scoring.
The Mavs have a record of 17-10 when Kyrie and Luka are playing together this season. The fit is coming together, especially in the fourth quarter, as the Mavericks are one of the best clutch teams in the NBA. They have a 17-6 record in clutch games this season, the best record among all teams.
The additions of Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington have added energy and versatility to the lineup, perfectly placing Dallas for a second-half push up the standings. Despite their 31-23 record, the Mavs are the No. 8 seed in the West, but only a game behind being as high as the No. 5 seed.
If Irving continues performing at this level next to Doncic, who would be an MVP candidate if the team had a better record, these Mavericks could make a deep playoff run. Even though Kyle Kuzma and Spencer Dinwiddie chose to stay away from the franchise this winter, they can prove everybody wrong with results on the court.
