Kyrie Irving is one of the best point guards in the league, and he was notably traded to the Dallas Mavericks ahead of this year’s trade deadline. Many believe that he can be a difference-maker for the franchise, and could help Luka Doncic win a championship.
Prior to his trade to the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving was heavily linked with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the Brooklyn Nets wanted an insane package from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for the star, and the Lakers wisely declined.
“Based on everything I was told, the Nets asked from the Lakers way more than they asked from any other team for Kyrie and they didn’t just want the two firsts and Russ, they wanted Reaves, they wanted Christie, they wanted Rui in a separate deal… They wanted everything the Lakers had, and I think they took less from the Mavs.”
There is no doubt that these demands from the Brooklyn Nets are exorbitant. They clearly took less to send Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, and perhaps Joe Tsai not wanting to send Kyrie Irving to Los Angeles played a part in that.
Lakers Fans Reacted To The News About the Nets’ Ridiculous Demands
When the news about the Nets’ demands to the Lakers regarding Kyrie Irving was revealed, a lot of Lakers fans took to Reddit to state their opinion on the situation. Many agreed that that would have been an overpay, though others made the argument that the Nets took the better win-now deal from the Mavericks.
Turned out fine for both sides imo
They would have had a hell of a time convincing the league that the “separate” Rui trade shouldn’t be aggregated with the other Kyrie deal.
It just means the Nets weren’t ever negotiating in good faith, they weren’t ever planning to trade Kyrie to the lakers.
Cold blooded move by Tsai. Also understandable
Is it possible that Dinwiddie and Finney-Smith are better for the Nets than Westbrook and Reeves? I think it is possible.
I think Dinwiddie+DFS is miles better than anything Lakers could offer them.
Majority of Lakers fans may disagree with me on this but I am glad we got the DLo package instead of Kyrie, considering what we gave up and what we would have.
People are saying it’s petty but Russ is a negative asset
yeah, at the time they were trying to keep KD, ofc you want players over picks.
I respect the pettiness
Nets management said they didn’t want to send him to the Lakers. They have a garbage deal on purpose
Bron said he could take any group to a championship, I’m not seeing the problem here.
If that’s the case I’m glad we said no. We can get him the offseason if he and the team really want.
Also none of that was going to help KD contend more than Dinwiddie and DFS. Spite might have played a role, but that deal just wasn’t as good as the Mavs deal for what they were trying to do
Of course, it makes sense that the Brooklyn Nets wanted to make a deal that would help them remain competitive since the Houston Rockets own the rights to a number of their future picks.
However, from a value perspective, getting two lottery picks from the Los Angeles Lakers could have been a better proposition. It remains to be seen how this deal works out for the Brooklyn Nets in the future, and hopefully, they don’t regret it.
