Larry Bird has been credited alongside Magic Johnson as the reason the NBA was saved from going bankrupt. Huge sums of money came into the NBA after Bird had retired, but he still made quite a bit thanks to his status as one of the best to ever do it. And he lived out a childhood dream doing so.

When he was a youngster growing up in Indiana, Bird dreamed of becoming rich. His story was recounted in a Sports Illustrated article by Frank Deford: “The little country boy in Indiana had a recurring dream. In it, he has found a million dollars cash, and he has dug a hole for it under the front porch, and he is hiding there with it.

“His older brothers walk up and down the steps just above him, but he stays so quiet, they don’t have an inkling that their kid brother is down there with a million dollars cash. ‘I had that same dream all the time—over and over and over and over,’ says the man who was the little boy.”

Everyone dreams of making it big and making a lot of money when they are young, especially if they come from an underprivileged background. Larry Bird didn’t grow up rich, so it’s no surprise he had this dream. What makes it truly amazing is that he made it come true and earned a lot more to go along with it too.

Larry Bird Is Worth Over $75 Million In 2023

Larry Bird may not have made the same amount of money his rival Magic Johnson made in life, but the Boston Celtics legend is comfortably rich. His net worth in 2023 is upward of $75 million, significantly more than he dreamed of making as a child. Larry Bird has never been the flashiest of people, and that seems like more than enough money for him to stay happy.

During his NBA career, Larry Bird made $24 million, which seems like so little when compared to modern NBA salaries. The league wasn’t thriving at the time like it is today, and Bird played a key role in putting it on the path to ensuring players get this kind of money in the modern era. Bird was known for actually doing what he said, and it looks like he made that happen with his dream as well.
