Luka Doncic entered the Mavericks vs. Bulls game last night on a streak of six 30-point triple-doubles. This was tied for the longest in history but broke when Doncic only notched a 27-point triple-double in their 127-92 win over the Bulls. Luka could have reached 30 if the officials called a three-point foul on him, and the lack of a call prompted a profane reaction from Doncic.

“He hit me right here!… F***ing hater, b**ch a**.”

Doncic stayed in the game to statpad in the fourth quarter even with the Mavericks having a nearly 40-point lead. The streak meant something to Doncic and the team, as they encouraged his participation. But an unmotivated Luka was bricking shots, going 1/5 in his limited fourth-quarter minutes. He was subbed out of the game to avoid injury, as the 30-point streak broke.

Doncic was also on a 35-point triple-double streak at the time (five games). Now, he’ll hope to move on from individual records and chase wins for the Mavericks, who are in the heat of the West playoff battle right now.

He ended the game against Chicago with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists. His playmaking has allowed Daniel Gafford to make history with the longest streak of consecutive field goals made since 1996-97.

Are Luka Doncic’s Stats Too Much To Impact Winning?

Luka Doncic is running away with the NBA’s scoring title and is averaging a ridiculous 34.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 9.9 assists this season. The Mavericks being the No. 8 seed despite this individual brilliance has led to criticism, with former Maverick Chandler Parsons saying he assumed it’s ‘exhausting’ to be Doncic’s teammate given his usage.

“I think [Luka Doncic] is an unbelievable talent, he’s literally a guard version of [Nikola] Jokic, where he can do anything. But as a teammate, it’s a little exhausting watching the same sh*t over and over again. And then when you don’t win it’s magnified — hey, can we try something else? Can I maybe get the ball? It definitely can be frustrating.”

His 35.9% usage rate is the highest in the NBA this season but tied for the second-lowest of his career. The Mavs won 52 regular season games and made a Western Conference Finals run in 2021-22 when his usage was at 37.3%.

His numbers seem gaudy but there’s no argument against the production. He’s doing it efficiently while also creating for his teammates. Kyrie Irving is excelling as his co-star while his centers Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington are the two most efficient players in their position in the NBA.

Doncic sharing production makes no sense when nobody on the team can impact the offense as he can. His playmaking prowess makes him a far better on-ball option than Kyrie, who anyway is thriving as a scorer next to Doncic.

The Mavericks’ 37-28 record has been colored by their injuries this season. Irving has missed 22 games while players like Lively, Dante Exum, Maxi Kleber, Josh Green, and more have missed chunks of the season due to injury.
