The NBA Conference Finals are currently going on, but that’s far from the biggest talking point in the United States as of Wednesday, with the nation’s eyes drawn to the horrific tragedy that occurred in Uvalde, Texas where another school shooting took place at an elementary school.

A gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and opened fire which resulted in the deaths of 19 children and 2 adults, a horrific situation that has once again sparked conversations about gun control in the country. The gunman himself was also killed in his ensuing encounter with law enforcement, but the damage had already been done, leaving families bereaved and others in shock.

Those involved with the NBA are celebrities in their own right, and as such, many have used their platform to speak out against the terrible incident. Steve Kerr spoke passionately ahead of Game 4 in the Warriors vs. Mavericks series, calling on legislators to address the issue, while other players also made their voices heard on social media.

LeBron James, who has often spoken about the social issues that plague the country also tweeted, expressing his firm belief that this state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue.

“There simply has to be change! HAS TO BE!! .. Praying to the heavens above to all with kids these days in schools.”

LeBron shared another message in support of the families of the victims but also questioned how many school-related tragedies it would take to bring about change.

“My thoughts and prayers goes out to the families of love ones loss & injured at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX! Like when is enough enough man!!! These are kids and we keep putting them in harms way at school. Like seriously “AT SCHOOL” where it’s suppose to be the safest!”

It is almost incomprehensible that senseless violence like this goes unchecked, and change is a necessity when it is the lives of children as young as 7 years old being put in harm’s way. The NBA will likely continue its efforts towards promoting causes that help and stars will continue to speak out, but it remains to be seen if any concrete action at the legislative level will come out of this.
