In a segment on Undisputed this week, the legendary Lil Wayne made headlines for his take on Lakers big man Anthony Davis. In the wake of Davis’ latest injury, Wayne insisted that the Lakers must move on from the 8x All-Star and that they will never win a title until they do.

“If the Lakers wanna be a championship team, in the future as well, they gotta get rid of him. You don’t wanna say anything about his health or he’s soft or anything like that… so, whatever it is, it’s AD. That’s his make-up and he’s shown us that. The only time we haven’t been shown that is in New Orleans. He shows us those spurts every other night, but it used to be every night. Now he’s just sitting down we don’t know what what works. What are we doing? Get rid of him and get some good players.”

Lil Wayne made sure not to go too hard on Davis and he didn’t use any specific words to describe his issues on the court. But since winning the title in 2020, Davis has been completely inconsistent and it seems that Lil Wayne is tired of trusting in a guy who just can’t seem to bring it every single night.

Anthony Davis Is Unreliable

The Lakers obviously have no plans to move off Davis, but there’s no arguing that he has struggled to live up to expectations as the main option in Los Angeles. As LeBron James got older, Davis was supposed to carry the franchise and take over the reins, but constant health concerns and frequent disappearing acts on the court have limited his ability to lead the Lakers. And while Davis is expected back in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Suns, how much longer can we expect him to stay healthy before his next setback?

For Davis, these concerns have been the story of his career. Aside from a few exceptions and outliers, the star big man embodies the definition of an injury-prone player and the last time he played over 60 games in a season was in his first run with the Lakers during the 2019-20 campaign. Unless Davis can become more available for the Lakers moving forward, it might be worth it to consider giving another star the keys to the kingdom.

A Rough Start To The Season

A series of mid-season trades completely flipped the trajectory of the team and when they made the West Finals last year, many saw it as a sign of things to come. Unfortunately, that just hasn’t been the case through the first few weeks of this season. While LeBron James has been excellent so far, role players like Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell have really dropped the ball and it’s been a struggle to generate offense.

With a record of 3-5, this is certainly not the start that the Lakers were hoping for this season but there is still time to get on the right track. If the 2022-23 campaign was proof of anything, it’s that the Lakers cannot be counted out as a player in the West. If they can just get one more season of good health and consistent aggression from Anthony Davis, it will give them their best chance yet at doubling up their 2020 championship.
