From LeBron James to Michael Jordan, several basketball legends are often mixed into the GOAT debate. This week, former NBA swingman Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) added a different name to the conversation: Spurs legend Tim Duncan. Writing out his updated All-Time list on X, Metta announced Duncan as his new no. 1.

“New list. The greatest NBA player of all time is Tim Duncan. Make an argument why not,” World Peace wrote.

For what it’s worth, Metta’s list seems to be constantly changing. Not too long ago, his top five looked way different and he excluded both Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. Later, he also snubbed LeBron James on his players’ ranking in favor of Wilt Chamberlain. Now, it seems he’s making the case for Tim Duncan and most of his fans disagree. As good as Duncan was, it’s somewhat of a hot take to put him over guys like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and even Kobe Bryant.

NBA Fans Join The Duncan Debate

When it comes to GOAT criteria, everything is taken into account. From wins to accolades to impact both on and off the court, everything holds weight when you’re talking about the top 10 greatest players ever. By default, Duncan has to land somewhere in this category, but where he ranks is highly debated amongst the community.

Surprisingly, a lot of fans actually supported the idea of Duncan as the GOAT and one look at his career achievements will tell you that he belongs in the conversation.

While most fans aren’t ready to crown Duncan over Michael, most can agree (at the very least) that Tim is an underrated legend whose career deserves more attention.

Of course, it isn’t lost on the fans how much Metta’s list has changed over the years and some of them pointed it out in the comments.

Deciding the greatest player of all time is never an easy thing to do, and it seems to be especially hard for Metta World Peace since he keeps changing his mind every single year. But Tim Duncan as the GOAT is still a reasonable take and it should be known how special the guy was during his 19-year career.

Tim Duncan Is A Basketball Legend

While you don’t hear much from Duncan these days, he said all that he needed to during his nearly two-decades-long career. Starting in 1997, Duncan averaged 21 points per game in his rookie season and it was just a taste of what would follow over the next 18 years. By the time he retired in 2016, Duncan was known as a 2x MVP, 5x champion, and 15x All-Star. For his career, he averaged 19.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game on 48% shooting.

As the leader and face of a Spurs team that dominated the 2000s, Duncan was more than a star: he was a generational talent who more than lived up to his potential. Of course, Duncan wasn’t as flashy as Kobe or as electric as Michael, but his career more than speaks for itself and it’s good that he’s finally getting some of the recognition he deserves.
