Amidst all the craziness that was the NBA trade deadline, one of the biggest moves of the season also happened to be one of the first.

In a shocking move, the Dallas Mavericks put all their chips on the table and traded for Kyrie Irving to pair with superstar talent Luka Doncic.

There are plenty of doubters who question the fit between two ball-dominant isolation players, but the Mavericks are doing their best to stay positive and prove everyone wrong.

Luka Doncic, in particular, seems excited about the opportunity in front of him. Speaking to the media ahead of Dallas’ game on Friday, he spoke about the big trade and what we should expect moving forward.

“We’ll obviously miss them here, but Kyrie’s Kyrie, man,” Doncic said to ESPN after Friday’s shootaround at the Golden 1 Center in his first extended comments since the Mavs made the blockbuster trade. “NBA champion. Probably the best ballhandler ever in the game. Amazing player, and he’s going to be fun to play with.”

From Kristaps Porzingis to Jalen Brunson, the Mavericks have thrown several sidekicks at Doncic, and none of them have stuck so far. But with Kyrie, Luka has a chance to play with a talent he’s never played with before.

“I never played with a guy like Kyrie, so it’s obviously going to be a work in progress,” said Doncic to MacMahon. “But I think it’s going to be fine. We both can play on the ball. For me, I think it’s going to be a learning process, for sure. Outside of my first season, I didn’t play off the ball. But with a guy like him it’s going to be different.”

The Mavericks finally have the star-studded duo they’ve been looking for, but will it be enough to put them above the competition?

Mavericks Have Championship Aspirations After Kyrie Trade

Going all-in for Irving was a huge risk for Dallas, but one they ultimately felt it was necessary to make. With Luka so young, playing so well, and under contract for several more years, now is the time for them to capitalize on his generational talent.

While Irving may not be the most ideal max player, or the most trustworthy, he does lift the Mavericks‘ ceiling to a level it hasn’t been in a long time.

Needless to say, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the future if you’re a Mavs fan.
