The NBA has been around for a long time, and obviously, during the history of the league, fans have seen some pretty amazing teams formed. But even among those teams, some teams are simply too good and have left a mark on fans that they will never forget.
Usually, such teams are given the honor of being called a dynasty. As we mentioned earlier, over the years, many teams have been honored with the label of being a dynasty. Keeping that thought in mind, one may wonder if the Detroit Pistons during their Bad Boys era were a dynasty.
They won back-to-back NBA Championships and even stopped arguably the greatest player of all time in, Michael Jordan, from getting past them multiple times during the playoffs.
Magic Johnson On The Bad Boys Pistons Missing Out On Being A Dynasty
The Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson was part of the showtime Lakers and is very well aware of what it was like playing on a dynasty. During his recent appearance on the ‘All The Smoke’ podcast, Magic was asked by Matt Barnes about his thoughts on whether Isiah Thomas’ Detroit Pistons were a dynasty or not.
(Starts at 44:10)
“When you win back-to-back, you gotta say if they are not a dynasty, they are close to it, right? I guess it’s up to every individual to say what they think a dynasty is, but let me tell you something, winning back-to-back is very difficult. So give them a lot of credit for going back-to-back and showing people that they were as good as advertised. Especially with Isiah’s leadership.”
In simple terms, as per Magic, the minimum requirement to be considered a dynasty is winning three consecutive NBA Championships. But the definition of it could be different for another individual.
At the end of the day, the Bad Boys Pistons may not be one of the most likable teams in the history of the league, but they were certainly good at dominating other teams in the NBA at their best.
