‘Jason Bourne’ star Matt Damon revealed why Jack Nicholson picked former Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as his GOAT.
Speaking on the Bill Simmons podcast, Damon relived the time Nicholson lavished high praise on Kareem. “Jack Nicholson told me this 20-something years ago,” the actor began.
“It’s a Golden Globes party, and we got to a corner talking about basketball. We were talking about who the greatest was. He said that Kareem, over the course of his career, unbelievably long, incredible career, that when the ball went through him, so when he touched the ball on offense, not necessarily took the shot obviously, but if he touched the ball on offense, his team scored 75% of the time.”
Nicholson’s words could never be more true as Jabbar was a prolific scorer whose record was only bested by LeBron James earlier this season. Not only was his offensive prowess integral in the ‘Showtime’ Lakers era, his game awareness and IQ were instrumental in creating shot-making opportunities for the rest of the Lakers on the floor.
Nicholson has been a long-time Lakers fan and has been a regular for the team’s games. To further add, he’s witnessed Kareem’s greatness up close, and his proclamation certainly holds water.

“I know I’d be able to contribute positively to a team,” Kareem said. “I’d have to work on and see how effective I was from the 3-point line because now everybody has to be able to shoot 3-pointers.”
