Michael Jordan’s reign as owner of the Charlotte Hornets has not been very successful so far. With only a handful of playoff appearances since taking over in 2010, MJ’s run in Charlotte has become somewhat of a blemish on his professional record.

And while it has been reported that Jordan may soon step back from his role as owner/governor and sell his stake in the team, commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that His Airness will continue to be a part of the league’s inner circle, whether he’s an official team governor or not.

“Adam Silver says Michael Jordan has indicated to him that if he sells his majority stake in the Hornets, he will remain an alternate governor and will still have an active interest in the future of the league and will be part of it going forward,” reported ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

It’s no secret that the NBA prefers to keep its legends involved, and MJ may be the biggest basketball legend of them all. As a 6x Champion and 5x MVP, Jordan captivated the world with his 90s run, and his impact can still be felt years later.

Despite his failure as an owner so far, his voice and insight are still extremely valuable to the NBA and its decision-making process.

Why Has Jordan Struggled To Revive The Hornets?

Considering Jordan was a winner in Chicago, many fans are confused why he hasn’t been able to bring some success to the Hornets, who are continually among the NBA’s worst teams.

As Stephen A. Smith recently pointed out, it could be because of his dominant run as a superstar player…

“There’s a whole bunch of people that never won because of Michael Jordan. The players weren’t the only careers that he messed with,” said Stephen A. “You know how many executives Michael Jordan denied an opportunity to house a championship trophy? Once Michael Jordan became an owner, how many people you think were interested in helping him do business? They were ready to abuse him at every turn because they couldn’t do anything against him on the basketball court. He wasn’t free to just pick the best basketball candidates and the best basketball minds. He had to pick people he could personally trust.”

No matter the reason for his results in Charlotte, Jordan’s run as governor may be over before it really started.

But even if he’s not officially a team governor, the league will continue to treat him like an MVP as they build up and expand the NBA empire.
