Thanasis Antetokounmpo has been in the NBA once before, in 2016, but his current stint has lasted from 2019 onwards. He won an NBA championship alongside his brother Giannis in 2021, but he has never been much more than a fringe role player. Some insinuate that Thansis only has a spot in the league because of his brother and that narrative has recently gained some more traction.

“When asked if Thanasis Antetokounmpo would be on an NBA roster without Giannis Antetokounmpo’s assistance, three NBA officials responded as follows:

“An NBA player personnel director: ‘No,’’ he responded immediately.

“An NBA scout: ‘Let me think about this for a few seconds. (He then pauses for about 10 seconds before answering). No.’

“An NBA general manager: ‘Hey, we know what that’s all about. It’s all about appeasing Giannis. But to answer your question, no.’”

Giannis Antetokounmpo is very close to his brothers, and it would be hard to deny that his impact has been a massive one in keeping Thanasis around. In his whole NBA career, Thanasis has only played 162 games, of which he has only started 11. A lot of DNP-Coach’s Decisions have come his way, even in Milwaukee, showing that there’s not a lot of faith he can perform at an NBA level.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo Does Bring Some Value In Terms Of Team Culture

Thanasis Antetokounmpo has a very lively personality, he is among those that bring motivational value and energy to his team off the bench. He is the sort of player to get into it with the opposition and get under their skin, which is an underrated skill in teams that want to win. He was also part of a championship team alongside his brothers, meaning that he has done something right.

Regardless, if the Milwaukee Bucks feel that he has value to the organization, that’s the only way they will keep him around. Despite being Giannis’ brother, they had no problem letting go of Kostas Antetokounmpo. But if Thanasis wants to justify staying in the league, it would help for him to average more than a point per game when he does get the opportunity to get out on the floor.
