Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets now look set to part ways at some point in 2023. The star guard requested a trade from the team on Friday and if they don’t move him before the trade deadline, Kyrie has made it clear that he would leave in the summer as a free agent.

With only a few days remaining, the Nets are now staring at a situation where they need to quickly get a deal over the line unless they are fine with Irving leaving for nothing in the summer. There were a couple of teams interested in acquiring him, with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks being the first ones mentioned.

The Phoenix Suns have also emerged as a suitor for Irving and we can expect a lot of speculation in the coming days. The Lakers do seem like the likely destination if he does get traded as he would reunite with LeBron James and ESPN’s Bobby Marks put out a potential trade between them and the Nets, involving Russell Westbrook.

NBA fans reacted to this proposed trade as they debated who would say no.

“The Nets say no. It’s really just a 1st round pick that they get and I don’t think they’re that eager for that”

“KD says no “

“Might not be enough, I think the Nets would rather keep Kyrie and give it a try this year as they are an established contender, than just ending up with Lonnie and a 1st”

“I don’t see Brooklyn going for this trade. But I like it as a laker fan”

“The nets imagine a lineup with Simmons and Westbrook the rims finna break”

“PERFECT TRADE”

“The nets. Russ will leave in free agency, and can get more from the suns or mavs”

“Add Thomas Bryant they are looking for a good big”

“Lakers, we need that pick and we can get kyrie after this season”

“The Nets probably won’t make this deal to be honest, look how Russell Westbrook been playing lately.”

“Nets, add minimal 1 more FRP”

“swap out joe harris for seth curry and add the second FRP on the lakers side and this is going thru”

“Nets would never answer the phone again if they heard this offer”

“Lakers gonna have to give up both picks. 27 and 29.”

“Nets. Imma need both those 1st rounders if I can potentially lose KD bc of this.”

“Lakers gotta add a second pick”

“If Brooklyn has a brain cell theyd say no”

“Lakers should say no”

Most do feel that this isn’t a good deal for the Nets. Westbrook himself is also going to be a free agent in the summer while Lonnie Walker is nothing more than a solid role player. They would effectively just be getting a first-round pick for Irving and the Nets would want more than that.

Kyrie Irving Rejected An Extension From The Nets

When the news first broke regarding the trade request, many wondered if the Nets had any kind of interest in having Irving on the team after the season. His agent had stated previously that no significant conversations had been held regarding an extension but it would appear the Nets did recently offer one to Kyrie.

It had guarantee stipulations in it though, which led to Irving rejecting it. He would want a fully-guaranteed deal but the Nets, after everything that has transpired since he arrived there, would have no interest in giving him one.
