Victor Wembanyama finally made his much-anticipated debut for the San Antonio Spurs in the Summer League on Friday night against the Charlotte Hornets. The stars were out to see the Frenchman in action, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West being in attendance, but Wembanyama’s debut was a mixed bag.

He had 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks on the night, but was just 2/13 from the field as the Spurs won 76-68. NBA fans reacted to the French phenom’s debut, with some not being impressed at all with him.

One called Wembanyama the biggest bust ever.

One fan said the stats don’t tell the full story here regarding Wembanyama’s debut.

Scoot Henderson should have been the first pick of the draft for one fan after this performance.

One fan is confident Wembanyama will be fine in the long run and thinks everyone is overreacting.

Wembanyama needs to get stronger, says one fan.

There were some positives and some negatives from his debut. First of all, Wembanyama looks set to be a very good shot blocker from the get-go, thanks largely to his height. He is also a gifted passer and on another night, could have had double-digit assists, as his teammates missed some shots.

On the negative side, he can be a bit lost on defense at times, but that is to be expected. His scoring is very much a work in progress too and he’s not going to have too many offensive explosions in his rookie season by the looks of it.

Victor Wembanyama Is Going To Be Just Fine

It is understandable considering all the hype, that many fans may have been a bit disappointed by the Frenchman’s debut. He was never going to take the NBA by storm right away though, so there is a need to temper expectations a bit.

There was talk of Wembanyama being an All-Star as a rookie and it’s safe to say he was never going to live up to those kinds of expectations. It is going to take him a little bit of time to truly assert himself in the NBA and when he does, he is going to be a massive headache for teams to deal with.
