Bryce James accomplished something on Friday night that his elder brother Bronny James never did: win a state championship with Sierra Canyon. Bryce and Sierra Canyon beat Stockton Lincoln 58-53 in the CIF State Division I championship game, and postgame, the teenager was asked if he now had bragging rights over his brother.

“He definitely should’ve had one in COVID,” Bryce said. “I’d still say it’s 1-1”.

Bronny and Sierra Canyon had advanced to the CIF State final in 2020, but they never got a shot at winning the title. COVID-19 caused the championship games to be canceled, and who knows what might have happened if there had been no pandemic?

Bryce reckons Bronny would have won and isn’t claiming any bragging rights. That’s a pretty good brother right there.

While Bronny wasn’t in attendance for this game at Golden 1 Center, some other family members were. LeBron James, his wife Savannah, and their daughter Zhuri all made the trip to Sacramento.

Bryce didn’t have the greatest of games in front of his family, finishing with three points (1-9 FG), five rebounds, two assists, and a block. They were still extremely proud of him, of course, and Bryce revealed LeBron had some advice for him during the game too.

“My dad on the sideline, he’s always coaching me up, telling me what to do,” Bryce said. “Like, even how tonight was, I wasn’t making shots, but he just told me to keep shooting. And that just means he has confidence in me. And from now on, I will always have confidence in myself and so will my teammates.”

LeBron was seen speaking to Bryce at times during the game, and the message was clear. Keep shooting and do not lose confidence in your abilities. LeBron later took to Instagram to express how proud he was of Bryce and congratulated him.

“Yessir! So proud of you, and congratulations, Bryce.”

This was Bryce’s last game in high school, and winning the state title was quite a way to bow out. The 17-year-old will be heading to the University of Arizona, and he hopes to win a title in college, too.
