Gilbert Arenas loved his sharks, and he spent a great deal to make sure they were well-fed and maintained.

The former wizard had a successful run in the NBA, and that also translated to some good moolah which he splurged on pet sharks. Such was his fascination that he had a fully-functional shark tank in his mansion.

Arenas’ career saw a meteoric rise when he joined the Washington Wizards. During his time, he made three straight All-Star Games between 2004-2007. In addition, he was also fourth in the entire league in scoring during the 2005-06 season, averaging 29.3 points per game.

This saw him land a plush six-year, $111 million deal with Washington, the result of which was some insane spending. Per Sportscasting, he reportedly spent $675 for car washes and even picked up an $8,000 toy Mercedes-Benz.

Given his eccentricities, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that he spends a whopping $80,000 dollars on his sharks annually. His journey, though, is pretty much a rags-to-riches story.

The shark tank had a caretaker who would reportedly be paid $1,500 to take care of the sharks and also a good $5,000 to make sure their food was taken care of.

Per a MARCA report, the former star also had over 500 firearms in his mansion. He also claimed that they weren’t loaded.

On a side note, there was also an interesting tale his teammate Nick Young shared about how Arenas once shot him with a BB gun during a team meeting.

In an interview with VLAD TV, Young said:

“He [Gilbert Arenas] was trying to be like a big brother to me. When I was down, he would do things to cheer me up. He took me shopping, let me go through his closet. I would steal his shoes and all that.”

Young then said Arenas once pulled a BB gun on him.

“But one day, like we was pranking, we had a paintball fight at his house, that’s when the BB guns came to the locker room,” Young said. “We had a paintball fight at his house. I went over there just to hang out, and he ended shooting me with paintball guns. ‘I’m going to get you back.'”

Trust Arenas to have pulled off something like that. But everyone has their hobbies, and the Wizards star had him, even if taking care of his sharks cost him a fortune.
