Dwight Howard’s ex-girlfriend Royce Reed was the latest guest on Funky Friday with Cam Newton and J.R. Smith was unhappy about some of the questions host Cam Newton asked her in the episode. Newton asked about Howard’s sexual preferences on multiple occasions and Smith called him out over it.

“Respectfully this is hella corny Cam, bringing on a black woman to kill a black man is never cool, don’t care who’s right or wrong,” Smith wrote. “All clickbait ain’t good clickbait. This ain’t love.”

Newton didn’t feel he did anything wrong, however. He had an interesting response to Smith calling him out.

“Call it what you want,” Newton replied. “Respectfully… I don’t go back n forth in no comments… I ain’t hard to find sir…”

Well, you can be the judge on whether Newton was in the wrong there. Here is the conversation on the podcast that led to Smith calling out the former NFL star.

Cam Newton: “I mean, we already here, f*** it. Is he gay?”

Royce Reed: “I think he’s curious.”

Newton: “Have you ever witnessed him in some gay s***? Curious is one thing but you ever witnessed him on some gay s***? being with another man in the bed?”

Reed: “I have never witnessed him doing it but I mean-“

Newton: “No no no… Have you ever witnessed him being with another man in the bedroom?”

Reed: “Yeah, all the time. They took mushrooms together and then they were like in the bed moaning and touching themselves. Yeah, but they said that’s an effect of taking mushrooms. I didn’t take them. I pretended to but I didn’t take them. I spit them right out.”

This wasn’t ideal and you can understand why Smith took issue with it. There’s really no good reason to have this conversation on a show.

You should also take anything Reed says about Howard with a grain of salt. To say their history is a troubled one would be an understatement.

Howard and Reed reportedly started dating in the early 2000s, before he was drafted with the first pick of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. They would split after a few years, as he allegedly cheated on her but then reconciled.

Howard and Reed would go on to have a son named Braylon in 2007 but split months after his birth. Some legal battles then followed in 2010 and the two have been at complete odds with each other since.

As for Howard’s sexuality, questions regarding it were first raised in 2018. An individual named Masin Elije, who claimed to be gay, stated he had been harassed, threatened, and manipulated by his ex-boyfriend Howard in a series of posts on X. Elije would later file a lawsuit but it was dismissed in 2023.

That same year, though, Howard was accused of sexual assault by Stephen Harper, who filed a lawsuit claiming he was forced into having a threesome. In response, the former NBA star stated it was a consensual act and the lawsuit was dropped in 2024. It was done with prejudice too, so Harper cannot refile it ever again.

All this has led to many believing Howard is gay, but he isn’t interested in answering questions about his sexual preferences. What the 39-year-old is interested in, though, is responding to all that Reed had to say. Howard revealed on Monday that he is dropping a positive diss track with his “wife” Amy Luciani.

Howard and Luciani have reportedly gotten engaged, which would explain why he called her his wife there. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of diss track these two have come up with. While we’ll have to wait for that, Howard has seemingly already fired a shot at Newton on X.

“A lot of snakes in this game that would do anything for views when they are broke smh,” Howard wrote.

Newton certainly isn’t going to take that well and we can expect some shots to be fired back at Howard soon enough. He clearly doesn’t believe he did anything wrong and won’t appreciate being called a snake.
