Tracy McGrady knows a thing or two about iso scoring, as he was one of the best scorers in the NBA at his peak. McGrady recently took to Instagram to share a sneaky move that he often used during his time in the NBA, to get by defenders.

“If you want to get by a defender from me, this is my move, this is the T-Mac move,” McGrady said. “This is nobody’s move, well I got it from (Steve Smith) but I’mma teach it. This is what I did. If you wanna learn, just watch and try.

“So, if I got a live dribble… I’m just reading which is his leading arm, whatever his leading arm is,” McGrady continued. “This (dribbling between the legs) is all fluff right here. If I wanna go left (slightly pulls the defender’s right wrist and goes to the basket) real quick. Pulling that and getting by my defender.”

McGrady said he’d use this tactic when he was operating in the mid post too. While many players resort to just swatting the defender’s hand down. he preferred pulling the wrist to ensure they had no chance to recover.

You have to be quick when using this trick, though, or else the referee could well call a foul. McGrady perfected it over the years and it sure helped him on the court. He won back-to-back scoring titles in 2003 and 2004, and I’m guessing he used this tactic to great effect in those years.

Tracy McGrady Shared How One Can Bait A Defender

McGrady often shares some useful basketball tips with his followers on Instagram like this. Earlier this year, McGrady explained how to bait a defender.

“If I’m coming down in transition, right, and I see my defender in front of me, if he’s not coming up, he’s going back, instead of backpedaling, I’m going to rise up. If I’m not comfortable shooting the three, how do I get him to come closer to me, right? Because he’s backing up as I’m coming at him.”

“So I’m coming down, right? He’s giving me that space. I act like I’m going into my shot. This right here is going to bring him forward because he’s thinking I’m going to shoot. So I’m coming here, but I’m not going to shoot.”

McGrady also shared that you can get open shots in the corner by jabbing and then shooting in the same motion. It gets the defender to lean and in turn, gets you an open shot.

I think it’s great that a Hall of Famer like McGrady has been sharing all these tips. With the kind of positive response that he had gotten for these, he started a series called “I should charge for this $” but, fortunately, he isn’t charging anything.
