Donovan Mitchell had a shoulder to lean on when he was called for an offensive foul against the Dallas Mavericks, but it wasn’t on any of his current teammates.
The Cleveland Cavaliers star was called for a foul after he raced to the basket with Dallas’ Tim Hardaway Jr. attempting to stop him. Mitchell pulled up for a swish and in that process elbowed Hardaway, who stumbled away.
Needless to say, the guard was not pleased with the call and rested his head against an angry JR Smith who was in attendance. The former Cavalier wasn’t one bit pleased either as he shook his head angrily.
The entire sequence was hilarious at best. It was a tight finish that ended 100-99 in the Cavaliers’ favor. Mitchell had 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Kemba Walker (32 points) and Christian Wood (26 points) contributed for the Mavericks.
Can Donovan Mitchell Be MVP This Season?
Much of Cleveland’s good run this season can be attributed to Donovan Mitchell. The Cavaliers acquired the 26-year-old by trading Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, and Ochai Agbaji, coupled with three first-round picks and two pick swaps.
Since his arrival, the Cavaliers have played the kind of basketball that makes them prime contenders to make the playoffs. Mitchell is thriving, with the side averaging 29.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.
Per Justin Termine of SiriusXM NBA Radio, the guard had done enough to stake a claim for MVP. He said:

“All this MVP talk that is resurrected around Anthony Davis for the last week or so… he’s playing for the 13th seed in the West. Mitchell is playing for the third seed. People are talking about Anthony Davis ‘oh is he back in the MVP race’ he is playing for the 13th seed. Mitchell is playing for the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference and he’s averaging more points and assists than Anthony Davis.
At the time of writing, the Cavaliers are placed third in the East with a 20-11 record. They play the Utah Jazz next, followed by a date with the formidable Milwaukee Bucks.
