Nikola Jokic looks destined to win his third consecutive MVP this season, but some fans don’t want to see him win the award again after past greats failed to achieve this feat.
LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo had a lot to say about Jokic’s MVP candidacy and rubbished the notion of voters’ fatigue holding him back, as revealed by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Giannis used examples of Michael Jordan and LeBron James not winning enough MVPs, “I think you should be judged not on what you’ve done in the past, I think you should be judged on what you’re doing that season. If you’re able to win 10 MVPs in a row, win 10 MVPs in a row. I feel like Michael Jordan was one of the best players to ever play this game, and he was always great, but he only won five MVPs out of 15 years he played, or LeBron [James] has won four MVPs out of 20 years.”
LeBron James, one of the biggest victims of voter fatigue in his career, also said it shouldn’t be a factor, “You hear sometimes ‘voters fatigue,’ voting for the same guy year after year after year. But at the end of the day, if he’s the MVP and he’s playing like the MVP, then you should get it year after year after year.”
Durant had a simple statement on the topic, though he later recognized the race for MVP this year features almost 7 to 8 players, “Ain’t they No. 1 in the West? He’s playing like an MVP.”
Players like Luka Doncic, Donovan Mitchell, and Jayson Tatum also shared their thoughts on what an MVP needs to do, and their answers seemed to fit Jokic to a tee. The players in the league seem to know who deserves this year’s award, so fans have to get on board sooner rather than later.
Should Nikola Jokic Be Crowned MVP Again?
The MVP case for Nikola Jokic is obvious through his numbers. He is leading the league in player efficiency rating while averaging 24.8 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 10.0 assists. His Nuggets are the best team in the West and are competing with the Celtics and Bucks to have the best record in the NBA.
Nuggets’ coach Michael Malone lauded Jokic as the clear MVP last night after Jokic’s 40-point triple-double in an OT win over the Clippers. The Nuggets haven’t lost a game with Jokic notching a triple-double in their last 26 outings, an incredible stat that exemplifies his impact on winning basketball.
