Kyrie Irving is a player that has requested a trade recently, and it is clear that this announcement took everyone by surprise. After all, the Brooklyn Nets have done well this season and were viewed as contenders in the Eastern Conference prior to this announcement.

An anonymous player who spoke to Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports suggested that Kyrie Irving’s trade request could be a tactic to force the Brooklyn Nets to give him the contract extension that he wants.

One player source who knows Irving suggested that his latest move is designed to force the club’s hand and keep him in Brooklyn.

“Let’s see how this plays out… What if this is just Kyrie trying to make them give him the extension… If he gets it? It’d be a new technique for everybody… This would be some gansta s*** right there… If you want a chance to win, you pay me. If you don’t, go f*** yourself.”

There is no doubt that it is easy to see this as a scenario: after all, Kyrie Irving wanted an extension with the club only a week ago. He could end up retracting his trade request in the future if his contract demands are met, given that he was willing to stay with the Nets until today.

Teams Have Already Registered Interest In Kyrie Irving

There have already been reports about potential teams that would be willing to make a trade for Kyrie Irving. The Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers are both teams that were reported as potential options.

The Lakers and Mavericks are among the teams Brooklyn is expected to engage in Kyrie Irving trade talks as next Thursday’s 3 PM ET trade deadline approaches, league sources say.

There is no doubt that either of those teams would stand to gain a lot from adding Kyrie Irving to their roster. The Mavericks need a co-star for Luka Doncic, while the Los Angeles Lakers need a No. 3 option who can help Anthony Davis and LeBron James carry the offensive load. It remains to be seen if either of the two teams manages to acquire him, but both have ways to make offers appealing for the Brooklyn Nets.

As we get closer to the trade deadline, it is quite possible that we see more teams state their interest in Kyrie Irving. He can be a true difference-maker in a year that has been marked by parity, and he could give an edge to a lot of Western Conference teams.
