Warriors Have Explored Acquiring Chris Paul Via Trade

The Golden State Warriors have looked at adding veteran point guard play by possibly acquiring Chris Paul this summer.

The Golden State Warriors saw their season end in the Western Conference Playoffs for the first time since their championship era started in 2015, losing in the 2023 second round to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team is under pressure to maximize their win-now window with the core trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. According to Shams Charania, one of the ways GSW looks to improve is by acquiring Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards.

“For now, the Wizards are gonna see if they can flip (Paul) him to a third team. A couple of teams to keep an eye on are the Clippers and Warriors, with both teams discussing a potential deal with the Suns prior to the (Beal) trade going down.”

The Clippers’ interest in reacquiring a former franchise leader has been evident since CP3 has been on the market. The Lakers are unlikely to trade for Paul but will be the leading candidate if he’s bought out and can sign a minimum on a team of his choice.

Paul averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists this season, showing he can still run an offense but not at the same level he used to in his prime.

Could The Warriors Use Chris Paul?

The Warriors do not have a pressing need for another guard, especially with both Steph Curry and Jordan Poole already sharing ball-handling responsibilities. But CP3 could further unlock Poole and Curry by being a pure floor-setter, allowing the rest of the Warriors to rely on their movement to find open opportunities.

It’ll be tough to trade for the contract without including Poole, so the Warriors will have to be careful. Unless they can possibly get Daniel Gafford also, they’re not going to move off Poole for a 38-year-old Paul as a backup. The Warriors haven’t had a point guard like Chris come in and play behind Curry, so this could be a very interesting duo, given their on-court rivalry and style of play.
