The Golden State Warriors made a concerted effort to acquire Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers, but ultimately, the Clippers were unwilling to trade him to a direct rival, according to a report by Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.

“The Warriors had agreed to give George a max, four-year extension upon arrival. They believed they had proposed several variations of a trade that the Clippers could and would accept. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were 100 percent on board.”

“George gave strong indications he wanted to join the Warriors. But the Clippers never agreed to any version of a trade, and now George is a free agent and essentially beyond the Warriors’ reach.”

The Warriors had significant interest in George and were prepared to offer him a maximum four-year extension upon arrival. The team believed they had proposed several trade packages that the Clippers could potentially accept.

These packages reportedly included combinations of players such as Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody, along with a future first-round pick. The Warriors’ star players, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, were fully supportive of bringing George to the team, and George himself had shown strong interest in joining the Warriors.

Despite these efforts, the Clippers were not willing to trade George to the Warriors. The Clippers’ reluctance stemmed from several factors, including concerns about sending a star player to a direct competitor and the financial implications of such a deal.

Trading George could have allowed the Clippers to get out from under the second luxury tax apron and gain more roster flexibility, but it would also mean losing a key player without a significant return.

The Warriors’ pursuit of George highlights the complexities involved in high-stakes NBA trades, particularly when they involve star players and rival teams.

The Warriors were cautious not to include both Wiggins and Kuminga in any single offer, recognizing the risk of giving up too much young talent for an older player with a substantial contract and injury history. This cautious approach was another layer of the complex negotiations that ultimately fell through.

With the trade for George not materializing, the Warriors now face several key decisions as they approach free agency. They must determine whether to guarantee Chris Paul’s $30 million contract for the upcoming season and explore potential trade opportunities involving him.

Additionally, the Warriors must address the potential departure of one of their dynastic players and how to bolster their roster to remain competitive.

The Clippers‘ decision to retain George, despite the potential financial relief trading him could offer, underscores their commitment to keeping their core intact a competing at the highest level. For the Warriors, missing out on George means recalibrating their strategy and making the most of their remaining assets and opportunities as they look to strengthen their team for the upcoming season.
