The LeBron James trade rumors continue to generate conflicting reports every day, but this latest update from NBA insider Sam Amick suggests the Miami Heat might be the team to beat, not the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Speaking on The Sports Leader podcast, Amick revealed that one rival team believes Miami is currently leading the race for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

“I’ve definitely been able to sense some optimism from Cleveland. I still don’t think that’s where this ends up, but there’s genuine hope there. Minnesota also still has legitimate hope. They’re doing real work behind the scenes, trying everything they can to put themselves in position to land him. So you can pick up little hints here and there.”

“I had someone tell me today that one of the other teams believes Miami is in the lead. Now, I don’t know where they’re getting that information. That’s always the tricky part. The Warriors have been hard to read throughout this process. They were out in front early, or at least it seemed that way. Now it’s hard to tell where they stand. The Denver situation over the last couple of days has been fascinating too.’

“I still don’t see LeBron ending up in Denver, but they haven’t been told they’re out. I think it’s fine to share this, I was in touch with Rich Paul, and he didn’t confirm that Denver was out of the running. At the same time, ESPN’s reporting has quietly stopped mentioning Denver altogether. That makes you wonder if some teams are slowly falling out of the race.”

“So I think this could still take a little while. And not to make a shameless plug, but I think we’ll have a good story coming out later today about some of the things we’ve learned regarding the LeBron sweepstakes and how this process has unfolded.”

This adds another layer to what has become one of the most talked-about free agency dramas in recent years.

For the last few days, almost every report has put Cleveland in the lead. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently said that teams around the league were losing hope because they believed LeBron was heading back to the Cavaliers. But he also mentioned that they were operating on vibes rather than concrete information.

And Amick’s latest comments only add fuel to the fire.

While the Cavaliers remain optimistic, the Heat have not given up. And they have several factors working in their favor. The Heat already made the biggest move of the offseason by landing Giannis Antetokounmpo, instantly creating one of the NBA’s most devastating frontcourts. The Heat have also held off on signing veteran free agents as they wait for LeBron’s decision.

There is also a lifestyle aspect. ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently pointed out LeBron’s growing obsession with golf as a reason why Miami shouldn’t be ignored.

But at the same time, the Cavaliers offer perhaps the storybook ending to his legendary career.

A return home would allow LeBron to finish where his career began, and the Cavaliers just reached the Eastern Conference Finals. They have one of the deepest squads in the league and just signed Donovan Mitchell to a four-year, $273 million extension.

The Philadelphia 76ers, the Golden State Warriors, and the Minnesota Timberwolves all remain in the mix as well, as the basketball world waits for LeBron’s decision.

For now, Cleveland may still have momentum, but one rival front office thinks Miami has the lead. Until LeBron makes his announcement, every contender will believe that they have a chance, and the Heat might have a better one than many had believed.
