Kyrie Irving sent shockwaves across the NBA by handing in a trade request on Friday after he and the Brooklyn Nets could not come to terms on an extension. There were some doubts about just how many teams would be interested in the star guard but it turns out there are a few.
It was first reported that the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were interested in Irving as they both looked to make the big move that their fanbases have been clamoring for. Then, the Phoenix Suns entered the mix, and we now have another team joining the Kyrie sweepstakes.
Brian Windhorst had suggested earlier that the Los Angeles Clippers would have the assets to make a deal for Kyrie and now Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Clippers are indeed interested in acquiring Irving.
via ESPN:
“The LA Clippers have joined the pursuit of Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving, sources told ESPN on Saturday.”
“The Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns — among others — have been engaging with the Nets since Irving’s trade demand on Friday, sources said. And now the Clippers – who’ve been in the trade market for a point guard — are probing a possible deal too, sources said.”
The Clippers have been linked with various point guards in recent weeks. They are said to be keeping tabs on Fred VanVleet and are also interested in the likes of Kyle Lowry and D’Angelo Russell. The driving force behind the Clippers looking to add a point guard seems to be Kawhi Leonard which makes you believe they will be seriously looking to bring someone in.
How Good Would Kyrie Make The Clippers?
If the Clippers do manage to land Irving, it would be the second big blow they’d have handed to the Los Angeles Lakers in the last few years, as they had managed to sign Kawhi when the Lakers were desperate to land him. Despite acquiring both Leonard and Paul George in 2019, though, the Clippers have ultimately fallen short in their quest for a title.
Kyrie’s inclusion will certainly be huge for the Clippers, and you have to say he would elevate them to become the clear favorites in the Western Conference on paper. They already have arguably the deepest roster in the NBA, even if they have to give up some of their key role players to get Kyrie, and that, along with a big 3 of Leonard, George, and Irving, would make them quite a feared unit.
