In a recent appearance on the ‘Steiny & Guru’ show, Golden State star Stephen Curry opened up a wide range of topics relating to his career and the current state of the Warriors. As a 4x champion and 2x MVP, Steph has nothing left to prove in his career but the only reason he’s still playing is to pursue another NBA championship.
“Somebody asked me this summer, ‘What are you still playing for?’ [Number five] That’s the only thing you’re playing for,” said Curry. “I like where we’re at right now. I think we have what it takes to do it. But I’m not fast-forwarding to saying, ‘Oh, we’re a championship team right now’ because we have another level to get to.”
Before February’s deadline, the Warriors were in pretty rough shape near the bottom of the West standings. Fortunately for Steph, they made a trade for Jimmy Butler that changed everything. The Warriors are 12-1 since Butler joined and, despite his past, Steph welcomed him with open arms.
“When the family feuds, it’s obviously tough and I know him and Miami have had a history of winning and didn’t end the way they wanted it to. When we talked and understood Jimmy was going to be here… He’s motivated to win and that’s everything that I heard.”
Jimmy Butler created a lot of chaos on his way out of Miami. After a falling out with Pat Riley, he forced his way out and he’s been with the Warriors ever since. As one of the best two-way wings in the game, Butler’s presence has fundamentally changed the franchise and now they are looking like a lock to secure a top-six seed in the West.
With Butler and Curry (24.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game) leading the way, Golden State can compete with any team in the league and there is a growing belief that they can make another championship run within the next few years.
Steph Confirms He Will Outplay His Current Contract
With Curry on the verge of turning 37 (birthday on March 14), the championship window is starting to close for the Warriors but Butler’s arrival has given them one last chance.
The good news is that Curry doesn’t plan to quit anytime soon. Even with another three years and $176 million on his contract, the NBA sharpshooter plans to play past it.
“I know my contract is lined up and I’d like to outplay that, for sure,” said Curry.
Steph has nothing left to prove in the NBA and his legacy as the greatest shooter ever is already set in stone. Even now, however, Steph continues to add to his resume as he plays at an elite, superstar level for the Warriors.
Alongside Butler and Draymond Green, Steph can once again lead the Warriors to prosperity but it won’t be easy. With teams like the Lakers, Nuggets, Thunder, and Grizzlies on track for 50+ wins, the West is deeper than ever before and the margin for error is narrow.
Still, Curry is a believer in his team and he knows that they can make some noise with the years that he has left. If the Warriors play their cards right, they could end up as champions again and enhance their legacy as the greatest team ever assembled.
