Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history. As he approaches his 37th birthday, questions about how much longer the two-time MVP will play have become increasingly frequent. In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s The Circuit with Emily Chang, Curry offered candid insights about his mindset regarding retirement.

“There are two ways to really go out in basketball: either you’re forced out or you go out on your own terms. I hope to be in a situation where you consider how your body feels, what it takes to get ready for games, and the offseason training that goes into preparing yourself for an 82-game season.”

“There will be a clear sign that it’s time to hang it up. I don’t want to be the one that’s limping up and down the court trying to keep up with the young bucks, but I don’t think I’m anywhere close to that yet.”

Despite the inevitable whispers about retirement, Curry continues to play at an elite level. Through the first 24 games of the 2024-25 NBA season, he is averaging 22.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 45.1% from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc. While these numbers mark a slight dip compared to his prime years, Curry remains a focal point for the Warriors and a lethal presence on the court.

This season has been challenging for the Golden State Warriors, as they sit at 14-10 and fifth in the Western Conference standings. Despite a slow start to the campaign, Curry has shown flashes of brilliance and continues to lead by example. His ability to adapt his game and stay effective in a league that grows younger and faster each year speaks volumes about his work ethic and basketball IQ.

Curry has sought advice from other sports legends about maintaining peak performance late into their careers. He has spoken with NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, who both thrived well into their late 30s and early 40s. Curry previously noted that while playing into his 40s remains a possibility, it depends on whether his body and mind continue to align with the rigorous demands of the NBA.

Curry’s goal is clear: to leave the game while still playing at a high level. He signed a one-year extension with the Warriors this past summer, keeping him under contract until 2026. By then, he will be nearing 40 years old and possibly contemplating the final chapters of his illustrious career.

As he continues to deliver for Golden State, Curry remains focused on the present. For now, fans can take comfort in knowing that the four-time NBA champion isn’t planning to hang up his sneakers anytime soon. As Curry himself says, there will be a clear sign when the time comes—and that day isn’t here yet.
