Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick cut a frustrated figure during his team’s shocking 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday. Redick’s frustrations seemed to boil over in the second quarter when the Lakers were down 38-32, as he went off on his players.

“Run the f***ing play,” Redick said.

It’s unclear who exactly Redick was most annoyed with there. Austin Reaves was the one who had the ball in his hands but his anger could have been directed at Dalton Knecht too.

Whatever the case may be, Redick was forced to take a timeout and wasn’t happy about it. Unfortunately for the 40-year-old, his outburst didn’t have the result that he’d have hoped.

After leading by as many as nine points in the first quarter, the Lakers were down 73-57 at halftime. The 76ers would go on to lead by as many as 25 points in the second half and it was an embarrassing loss for the visitors, especially as both Joel Embiid and Paul George were out.

Sure, the Lakers suffered a big injury blow of their own as Anthony Davis exited the game in the first quarter due to an abdominal strain, but it still doesn’t excuse losing in this manner. This defeat snapped a four-game win streak and dropped the Lakers to 26-19 on the season.

JJ Redick Called Out His Players After The Game

Redick was critical of his players after the game as well. In his postgame press conference, he acknowledged that his players were tired as it was their third game in four nights but felt they were off mentally too.

“3 in 4 nights, back to back. I’m not sure where our collective brains are at,” Redick said. “I understand the physical fatigue. We were a step slow all night on (Tyrese) Maxey.”

Tyrese Maxey certainly had his way with the Lakers. Maxey finished with a game-high 43 points (15-26 FG), to go with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. What also hurt the Lakers apart from the star guard’s big night was their inability to hold on to the ball.

The Lakers had 22 turnovers and it resulted in 27 points for the 76ers. A bulk of those turnovers were committed by James, who had eight. Redick attributed some of them to fatigue and perhaps the four-time MVP shouldn’t have had the ball that much if there wasn’t much gas in the tank.

Despite all his frustrations, Redick believes the Lakers are headed in the right direction. He wanted everyone to look at the big picture and recognize that they were without not just Davis after he left the game, but also the likes of Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt.

The Lakers will take on the Washington Wizards next at Capital One Arena on Thursday at 7 PM ET. It’s unclear if Davis will be back for that one, but Vincent and Vanderbilt might be.

It will be interesting to see how the Lakers respond to this loss when they take on the Wizards. It’s a team they should blow out, but then again, they should have dominated against the 76ers too.
