The Los Angeles Lakers have suffered a significant setback, as LeBron James is expected to miss up to two weeks due to a groin strain, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania

The 40-year-old superstar sustained the injury during the Lakers’ 101-111 loss to the Boston Celtics and will undergo further evaluation after allowing the strain to settle over the next 24 hours. While initial concerns suggested he could be sidelined for a longer period, the current timeline offers some relief for Lakers fans.

LeBron has been playing at an elite level this season, averaging 25.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 8.5 assists while shooting 51.7% from the field and an impressive 38.4% from three-point range.

His stellar performances earned him the February Western Conference Player of the Month award, the 41st time in his career he has received the honor. Despite being 40, LeBron has continued to defy expectations, but this injury marks yet another physical challenge in his 22nd season.

While LeBron downplayed the injury in his post-game press conference, the Lakers will be cautious given his history with groin issues. Groin strains can be tricky injuries, and recovery times vary depending on the severity. A mild strain (Grade 1) can heal within a couple of weeks, while a more moderate strain (Grade 2) could take a month or longer.

The most severe form, a Grade 3 tear, could sideline a player for multiple months and potentially require surgery. Fortunately, reports suggest LeBron’s strain is not severe, meaning his absence should be limited.

The Lakers currently hold a 40-22 record, placing them third in the Western Conference. With the standings extremely tight, every game moving forward will be crucial. The team is just 1.5 games ahead of the fourth seed, two games clear of the fifth seed, and 5.5 games above the sixth spot.

Their primary objective should be to remain within the top five, ensuring they avoid the Play-In Tournament while maintaining home-court advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs.

LeBron’s absence comes at a challenging point in the schedule. Over the next two weeks, the Lakers face eight games, including road trips to Milwaukee and Denver, two of the toughest arenas in the league. Additionally, they host Phoenix, Denver, and Milwaukee in a brutal stretch of fixtures. The Lakers will need to rely on Luka Doncic and their supporting cast to keep the team afloat in LeBron’s absence.

This stretch will also be an important test for head coach JJ Redick, who will have to adjust his rotations and offensive strategies without LeBron on the floor. The Lakers’ depth will be put to the test, with players like Austin Reaves needing to step up.

While losing LeBron James for any amount of time is far from ideal, the Lakers can take solace in the fact that the injury isn’t more serious. The key now is navigating these next few weeks without falling too far behind in the standings and ensuring LeBron returns fully healthy for the stretch run into the postseason.
