NBA free agency has turned into a full-blown LeBron James watch as he mulls his next big decision. At 41 years old, the next team he joins will likely be his last, and he doesn’t want to waste his final seasons in a subpar situation.
That’s why LeBron is taking a patient approach this summer, in the hope of giving himself one last opportunity to win another championship. As it stands, half the teams in the league have made an offer for James, and (according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin), some have even made a pitch through private voice messages.
“As LeBron James’ free agency decision stretches into its second week, some teams interested in him joining them have had an opportunity to pitch the four-time champion indirectly,” wrote ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “Sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday that Rich Paul, James’ agent and the CEO of Klutch Sports, has facilitated team executives in selling their vision to him by sending a voice note for James via Paul.”
The messages aren’t coming from random fans or players; they are mostly GMs and executives, competing against each other to win over the summer’s top free agent. The only teams that have taken a more passive recruiting approach are the Heat and Cavs, the two teams LeBron has already played for. Despite their lack of aggression, they remain firmly in the lead.
“A few other teams have had their owner, or president, or general manager record a voice memo,” McMenamin added. “It is unclear whether the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat have been involved in the practice, as James already has intimate familiarity with both franchises having played for them in the past.”
As for when LeBron will make his choice, teams shouldn’t hold their breath. We’re nearly a month into free agency now, and the four-time champion has been too busy having family time to contemplate his basketball future. Since he’s planning to sign for the minimum (or the mid-level exception at most), there’s no rush for him to decide, meaning he has all summer to weigh his options.
“Sources told ESPN that James is still in the process of absorbing the pertinent information for every suitor, with one source saying there is ‘no timetable’ for the 41-year-old veteran to make his decision,” McMenamin added. “James has spent the last few weeks with family and friends enjoying vacation and time on the golf course, in no rush to decide.”
At this point, LeBron James has the entire league on pause, but it’s impossible to deny that he’s earned the right to dictate his ending. After averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game last season, LeBron showed signs of aging, but he proved he’s still capable of elite-level play. Whatever James decides, it will shift the balance of power in ways that only the very best can. So, for any GM hoping to get LeBron at a discounted price, there’s almost nothing they won’t say to sway his opinion, especially since he won’t be meeting with teams in person.
It remains to be seen if any of these voice messages will make a difference, but it surely won’t hurt to make a case to LeBron directly with so many variables to consider.
