Savannah James appeared on the latest episode of the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, where she spoke about the time when her husband, LeBron James, proposed to her at a New Year’s Eve party in Miami in 2011. Savannah shared that she had no idea about LeBron’s intentions that night, and the tears didn’t stop after he popped the question.

“So we’re at the party,” Savannah said. “Countdown happened… Happy New Year. We come back. I’m on my phone texting like all my people, Happy New Year, whatever. And LeBron is behind me, tapping me on my shoulder. Just tapping. I’m like, ‘Hold up. Hold up.’… Now it’s like a crowd. So, somebody said, ‘Savannah, turn around.’

“And I turn around, and he was on his knee,” Savannah continued. “Mind you, Miami, it was a time. So, in that instance, I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ So, I just busted out crying, and he did his speech and put the ring on, and I said, ‘Yes.’ And he like, ‘Okay, go get yourself together ’cause you looking crazy.’ I was bawling, crying.”

Savannah revealed this was a curated public party at the Shelborne hotel in Miami. She probably never expected LeBron to propose there of all places. Host Angie Martinez thought Savannah would have had an inkling that he would ask her that question at some point, but she didn’t.

“I had no idea,” Savannah said. “Yeah, he got me.”

He got her, indeed. This, of course, occurred during LeBron’s tenure with the Miami Heat. So, it was only fitting that his Heat teammate and great friend Dwyane Wade, was tasked with holding on to that ring.

Wade and his then-girlfriend Gabrielle Union were among the few who knew beforehand that LeBron was going to propose. Union was with Savannah as she was getting dressed and told her not to wear the pink lipstick that she wanted to. Her advice was ignored.

Savannah greatly regretted having that pink lipstick on her when she was crying uncontrollably. She wished at that point that she had listened to Union.

This was also a party to celebrate LeBron’s 27th birthday, which was on Dec. 30, 2011. Talk about a memorable time for the great man.

With the clock striking midnight, LeBron and Savannah technically got engaged on Jan. 1, 2012. Then would later get married on Sept. 14, 2013, at the Grand Del Mar Hotel (now called Fairmont Grand Del Mar) in San Diego, California.

By the time they got married, LeBron and Savannah had been together for over 10 years. They were high school sweethearts who had also welcomed two children before they tied the knot.

LeBron and Savannah’s first son, Bronny, was born on Oct. 6, 2004. A few years later, they welcomed their second son, Bryce, on June 14, 2007. Finally, after their marriage, the couple had their first daughter, Zhuri, on Oct. 22, 2014.

As is the case with any relationship that has been going on for this long, LeBron has mentioned how things have not always been perfect between him and Savannah. There would have been difficult moments, but these two have stuck together, and it doesn’t look like they’ll ever part ways.

LeBron has even admitted he wouldn’t be in the position he is today if not for Savannah. These two are a great example to look up to for every couple.
