LeBron James has been enduring an uncharacteristic shooting slump, and the Minnesota Timberwolves bench didn’t miss the opportunity to capitalize on it.

During the Los Angeles Lakers’ dismal 109-80 loss to the Timberwolves, LeBron airballed a three-pointer from the wing in the second quarter. What followed was an animated reaction from the Wolves’ bench, with players ducking and covering their heads as though the errant shot might land on them. The display drew laughs from the crowd and added salt to the wound for a struggling Lakers team.

This playful mockery from the Wolves’ reserves highlighted a stark contrast between LeBron’s legendary career and his current shooting woes. Over the past four games, LeBron has missed 19 consecutive three-pointers, the worst streak of his career since his rookie season.

Against Minnesota, he managed just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting, including an 0-for-4 performance from beyond the arc. For a player who has been a consistent offensive force for two decades, this slump feels like a rare and humbling chapter.

The Timberwolves’ reaction, though lighthearted, also reflects the changing dynamics of the NBA. LeBron has spent the majority of his career as an untouchable figure, rarely mocked or disrespected openly.

However, moments like these showcase a shift, where even younger players and reserves feel emboldened to jest at the expense of the aging superstar. It’s a testament to LeBron’s longevity and dominance that any sign of decline garners much attention, but it also underscores how opponents view the Lakers’ current struggles as an opportunity.

Despite the mocking gesture, the Wolves’ bench wasn’t entirely out of line. The game itself was a testament to their dominance over the Lakers, as Minnesota capitalized on Los Angeles’ offensive woes. Anthony Davis, who had been carrying much of the load this season, also faltered, scoring just 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

The Lakers turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 26 points for the Timberwolves. Meanwhile, Minnesota showcased balance and cohesion, even with Anthony Edwards having an off-night, scoring only 8 points. Contributions from Rudy Gobert and a deep bench sealed the blowout victory.

LeBron’s reaction to the Wolves’ antics was notably muted. A player of his stature is no stranger to criticism or ridicule, and throughout his career, he’s demonstrated an ability to channel such moments into motivation. While this particular episode may sting, it could also serve as fuel for LeBron to bounce back in future games. Historically, he has thrived in moments where his back is against the wall, and his competitors doubt him.

For the Timberwolves, their bench antics may have provided a lighthearted moment in a dominating win, but it also painted a target on their backs. The Lakers and LeBron are unlikely to forget this game. As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see if LeBron uses this incident as part of his relentless pursuit of excellence, potentially silencing his doubters—benchwarmers included—with another signature performance.
