Today is a big day for Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Just a few months removed from his first NBA Finals appearance, the 2024 Rookie of the Year has just secured his first rookie-level max extension. It marks a huge moment for both Victor and the Spurs, for more reasons than one.

The news, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, reaffirms the Spurs’ commitment to their star during a summer of historic league-wide activity. The deal is for a whopping five years and $252 million, but Victor left some money on the table in the hopes it might help them make adjustments down the road.

“Wembanyama decided on the 25% maximum instead of the 30% supermax escalators to $303M, after he and the Spurs went through multiple frameworks,” wrote Shans on X. “San Antonio worked in close partnership with Wembanyama and his representatives, offering the full supermax and different variations of extensions. But Wembanyama ultimately chose a contract sacrifice rooted in giving him and the organization increased ability to build a sustained title contender around him.”

Instead of taking the super max, Victor opted for the regular max, which came with a 5% pay cut. Essentially, the decision will cost Victor nearly $50 million (including escalators), but he considers it a small price to pay to help his team maintain financial flexibility. Of course, under the modern CBA rules (which heavily restrict team-building over the cap), the move carries even more weight.

“Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt, CEO RC Buford, GM Brian Wright and coach Mitch Johnson traveled to Paris to meet and spend time with Victor Wembanyama and his family and reps Friday,” Shams added. “Wembanyama was essentially a lock to earn a $303M supermax if he played 65 games next season — but he opted for a significant sacrifice at a flash point for the Spurs’ rise.”

As the consensus No. 1 overall pick in 2023, there’s no question Victor is worth the absolute max. Last season, just his third in the league, he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game on 51.2% shooting and 34.9% shooting from three, leading the Spurs to the second seed in the West before losing in the Finals.

With Victor at the helm, San Antonio can be competitive for years to come, and this extension ensures that reality. More than that, it proves that Wembanyama is willing to sacrifice his own profits for the pursuit of an NBA title. It’s the same thing that the old Spurs legends (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker) used to do back in the day, and Wemby is happy to follow in their footsteps.

The important thing for the Spurs is that they don’t let Victor’s sacrifice go to waste. While they have a stacked roster already, they must be intentional about using whatever space they have to fill with the appropriate talent.

Whether it’s LeBron James or someone much less known, we can expect the Spurs to spare no expense in building a championship team around Wemby. They’re not far off as-is, and Victor’s selfless sacrifice should give them enough flexibility to make notable improvements.
