The New York Knicks did exceptionally well behind the leadership of superstar point guard Jalen Brunson. Brunson averaged 28.7 points and 6.7 assists per game as a perennial MVP candidate in the regular season and ballooned his numbers to 32.4 points and 7.5 assists per game in the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, the Knicks were bounced in Game 7 of the second round against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

Looking ahead to next season, Jalen Brunson, defensive-minded OG Anunoby, and even swingman Josh Hart are the key untouchables for the Knicks but two-time All-Star Julius Randle might not be anymore. The Knicks finished second in the East with Randle only playing 46 games, and since he is still an All-Star, perhaps there could be a blockbuster deal on the table for the Knicks to acquire Kevin Durant from the struggling Phoenix Suns.

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Kevin Durant

Phoenix Suns Receive: Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Donte DiVincenzo, 2024 First-Round Pick, 2029 First-Round Pick, 2030 First-Round Pick

This trade would completely shake up both conferences because the Phoenix Suns need an elite big man to pair with Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, and this deal that gives Durant to the Knicks could give them that.

New York Knicks Build A New Big Three, Challenge Boston Celtics For First Seed

Kevin Durant would create one of the best Big Threes in the NBA in a move that could redefine the New York Knicks’ fortunes. Under the eye of head coach Tom Thibodeau, known for his defensive expertise (2nd in OPPG), the Knicks have everything else in place to win. Players like OG Anunoby and Josh Hart (9.4 PPG, 8.3 RPG) have thrived under Thibodeau’s tutelage, showcasing their defensive prowess night in and night out.

Now, with Durant’s impending arrival, the Knicks are poised to unleash a new era of dominance. Forming a formidable Big Three alongside rising star Jalen Brunson and defensive stalwart OG Anunoby, Durant brings an unparalleled scoring ability and championship experience to the table. The prospect of Durant donning the iconic blue and orange jersey rejuvenates a fanbase hungry for success, with visions of a revitalized team emerging as a true force in the Eastern Conference.

With the proposed starting lineup of Brunson, Anunoby, Hart, Durant, and Isaiah Hartenstein (priority in Free Agency), the Knicks boast a blend of offensive firepower and defensive tenacity that could rival any team in the league. The sheer versatility and skill set of this lineup are poised to present nightmares for opposing defenses while suffocating opposing offenses with relentless pressure. Even at 35 years old, Durant averaged 27.1 points per game and is still in the conversation for being a top-10 player in the world.

Phoenix Suns Become An All-Around Better Team In Short And Long-Term

Currently boasting a formidable duo in Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, the Suns recognize the need for a more complete lineup, particularly with stronger wing and forward play. The addition of Julius Randle (24.0 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 5.0 APG) in the trade presents an opportunity to form a dominant frontcourt duo alongside Jusuf Nurkic (10.9 PPG, 11.0 RPG), providing the Suns with a formidable inside presence to complement their backcourt firepower.

Furthermore, the trade allows the Suns to address their defensive shortcomings, as evidenced by their 13th-ranked defense. By moving Durant and acquiring two big men along with a sharpshooter in DiVincenzo (40.1% 3-PT FG), the Suns can bolster their defensive identity and shore up their weaknesses on that end of the floor. Additionally, with the Suns not owning picks until 2030, the acquisition of three first-round picks in the proposed trade provides them with valuable assets for future roster building and flexibility.

This trade highlights the potential for further roster improvements through savvy moves in free agency or promoting players like Josh Okogie to enhance the team’s defensive identity on the wing. By strategically addressing their roster needs and leveraging the assets acquired in the trade, the Suns position themselves not only for immediate improvement but also for sustained success in the long term.

A Win-Win Deal That Creates Excitement In Madison Square Garden

This blockbuster trade between the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns presents a win-win scenario that has the potential to create excitement in Madison Square Garden and beyond. For the Knicks, acquiring a superstar like Kevin Durant injects a renewed sense of hope and optimism, elevating the team’s status to a contender level and reigniting the passion of their loyal fanbase.

Meanwhile, the Suns benefit from a roster overhaul that addresses their need for a more complete lineup and strengthens their defensive identity, all while acquiring valuable draft assets for future roster building. The Suns need to change their core but are tied as currently constructed.

The prospect of seeing Durant donning the iconic Knicks jersey and leading the team back to prominence adds a new layer of intrigue to the NBA landscape. Similarly, the Suns’ transformation into a more well-rounded and competitive team sets the stage for an exciting chapter to correct their wrongs from last season.
