Kawhi Leonard may be called a ‘fun guy’ by his biggest fans, but don’t let that fool you. Unlike many superstars of today, Leonard isn’t really about the celebrity lifestyle and that was evident for a long time due to his previous vehicle of choice: a 1997 Chevy Tahoe.
“It runs,” Leonard said, according to NBA writer Lee Jenkins. “And it’s paid off.” For most people, the Chevy is proof of Leonard’s humility and another example of his low-profile personality.
But for Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey, it’s just plain stupid. In a series of Tweets, he offered his own perspective on why Kawhi driving a ’97 Tahoe is actually not humble at all.
Nothing humble about this. This is actually just dumb lol https://t.co/TktMLQJIV7

Just based off car safety alone and the upgrades that has happened since 1997 makes it dumb https://t.co/6bbt4f7rII

On one hand, there is nothing wrong with keeping and driving the same car for decades. Even for a millionaire like Kawhi, there’s no need to spend money on a newer ride when he’s got one that works fine enough.
On the other hand, it’s probably not a good idea to use an older car like that if you can just afford to buy a newer one — which Kawhi certainly can.
We don’t know if Leonard is still driving that old truck now, but a lot has changed for him since then and he’s facing more pressure to deliver now than he ever has before…
How Far Can Kawhi Leonard Lead The Clippers This Season?
With Kawhi, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook, the Clippers have had a pretty up-and-down season and many fans aren’t sure what to make of it.
On paper, the Clippers have one of the best rosters in the league and several experts picked them to win it all before the start of the season.
But at just 3 games above .500, Los Angeles has been far from dominant and there are major questions about what they can do in the postseason.
“The Clippers? Everything is under control here, now that they signed the player their in-town rivals couldn’t wait to be rid of and promoted him to the starting lineup. Russell Westbrook’s high-usage, low-efficiency, non-floor-spacing style seems almost perfectly suited to minimize Kawhi Leonard’s and Paul George’s effectiveness,” said an NBA executive, via The Athletic. “Actually, I fear them much less now,” said one exec, who was granted anonymity so that he could speak freely. (Also, um … didn’t they already try this two years ago with Rajon Rondo? How’d that work out?).”
Only time will tell if the Clippers have what it takes, but time is quickly running out for them to take advantage of a weakened Western Conference.
